The Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences is looking for a Learning and Engagement Assistant (0.8 FTE) to support the development and delivery of a programme of activities aimed at increasing, diversifying and deepening audience engagement and participation both in person and online. The programme draws on current research and researchers, and has a strong emphasis on current themes in Earth, climate and environmental science, on addressing inequality and challenging stereotypes within the Earth sciences, and on the legacies of empire within the Museum's collections.
The Museum welcomes around 150,000 visitors a year, and currently has a staff team of around 14 people. We have the privilege of caring for an internationally significant geological collection, and the benefit of an outstanding team of staff and volunteers. Our position at the intersection between the scholarship of the University and our wider audiences and communities enables the Museum to bring people together to stimulate learning, knowledge-sharing, discussion and debate about the extraordinary history of the Earth, life, the environment and the challenges facing society. We want the Museum to be enjoyable, fun and a place for everyone, and we embed compassion, kindness, inspiration, respect, honesty, inclusivity and a welcoming approach in all we do.
Under the guidance of the Learning and Engagement Manager, this role will support coordination of all aspects of learning and engagement activities at the Sedgwick Museum, on- and off-site as necessary, across all ages and audiences from Early Years, FE and HE, adult and families. The role-holder will support the development and delivery of learning sessions and events, including some evening and weekend work, for example workshops and family activities, as well as outreach at other sites. They will also support the Learning and Engagement Manager in supervising the Museum's volunteers during learning activities and ensure that all visitors to and users of the learning and engagement facilities in the Museum, are served to a consistently high standard.
The successful candidate will have previous experience in a formal or informal learning environment, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a demonstrable knowledge of and interest in science and/or national history. Team working skills are essential alongside the ability to review and improve systems and procedures, and familiarity with the National Curriculum.
Please note the role holder will be required to work occasional evening and /or weekends, with prior arrangement.
Limited funding: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
Please note a DBS enhanced with children's barred list check will be required for the role.
