The role

The Neurodevelopmental Clinical Nurse Specialist will deliver high‑quality, highly specialist ADHD care to children and young people across Southwest Hertfordshire as part of the Children and Young People’s ADHD Team within the neurodevelopmental pathway.

The post‑holder will be responsible for managing a pre‑ and post‑diagnostic caseload, undertaking comprehensive ADHD assessments, contributing to diagnostic decision‑making, and providing evidence‑based interventions in line with national guidelines and best practice.

As an independent prescriber, the post‑holder will initiate and manage ADHD medication, including titration and ongoing physical and mental health monitoring. They will work autonomously while collaborating closely with children, young people, families, and the wider multidisciplinary team to develop and implement individualised treatment plans.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake ADHD assessments with children and their parents/carers.
  • Provide ongoing medication titration appointments and prescribe medication as necessary, including all associated monitoring.
  • Perform relevant physical health monitoring associated with ADHD treatment (e.g., height, weight, blood pressure, pulse), potentially extending to patients not on the own caseload.
  • Act as a core member of the multidisciplinary CYP ADHD team working alongside doctors, nurses, and multidisciplinary ADHD assessors.
  • Design and deliver psycho‑educational sessions for parents and carers, GP and schools.
  • Support the implementation of the shared care pathway for service users with ADHD across primary and secondary care.
  • Handle highly complex, highly sensitive or highly contentious information, employing persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training, empathetic or reassuring skills where necessary.
  • Initially manage the treatment of ADHD; scope may extend to other diagnoses based on education, training, development, and achievement of competence.
