HGV Driver [Class 1] To safely operate a HGV Class 1 (Category CE) articulated vehicle to carry out scheduled and ad hoc waste transportation and collection services, ensuring full compliance with road transport legislation, site safety procedures and operational standards. The role is central to delivering excellent customer service and supporting environmental and waste management operations. Irish Waste, 94-96 Hillsborough Road, Carryduff, BT8 8HT Key Responsibilities Driving & Operations Operate a HGV Class 1 (Category CE) articulated vehicle to complete daily waste transport duties, including trailers, tankers, or walking‑floor units depending on business needs. Conduct pre‑use and post‑use vehicle and trailer checks in line with legislation and company procedures. Couple and uncouple trailers safely and competently. Ensure safe loading, securing, transportation and tipping/discharge of waste materials. Complete daily route sheets, delivery notes and digital records accurately. Report vehicle or trailer defects immediately and maintain vehicle cleanliness. Loading and Unloading: Support safe loading and unloading of waste materials, whether manual, mechanical or via specialist equipment (e.g., hydraulic systems on tankers or walking floors). Use appropriate handling equipment, ensuring all items and loads are managed safely and efficiently. Sort, segregate, or verify waste streams as required to comply with regulatory standards Regulatory Compliance & Safety Adhere to EU/UK Driver Hours Regulations, Tachograph rules, and the Working Time Directive. Comply fully with all Health & Safety, ADR (where applicable), and Environmental regulations. Follow site-specific risk assessments, method statements and safe working practices. Use PPE correctly and consistently and promote a strong safety-first culture Customer Service Represent the company professionally when interacting with customers on transport routes or at client sites. Handle customer queries appropriately and escalate issues where necessary. Ensure collections and deliveries are completed to the required standard and report any issues promptly Operational Support Collaborate with the operations team to optimise routes and improve collection efficiency. Monitor and report any operational issues, such as vehicle defects or route challenges, to the relevant department for resolution. Participate in training and development programs to enhance skills and stay up to date with industry standards. This is not an exhaustive list. You may also be required to carry out any other duties as required by the business that you are qualified/trained in that meet the requirements of this role Skills, Knowledge and Expertise Essential Valid HGV Class 1 (Category CE) licence Valid CPC card Digital Tachograph card Experience in driving articulated vehicles Able to competently and safely operate assigned vehicles Knowledge of transport legislation and safe driving practices Desirable Previous experience in waste management, recycling, tanker operations, walking-floor trailers or environmental services ADR certification (Packages or Tankers) Ability to operate specialist equipment such as suction/vacuum tankers, walking floors or other waste industry vehicles (training can be provided) Skills & Competencies Strong awareness of health & safety Good communication and customer service skills Reliable, punctual and able to work independently Physically fit and capable of manual handling Positive attitude and commitment to high service standards Problem-solving mindset when facing route or site challenges Job Requirements Monday to Friday 42.5 hours per week Hourly Rate: £17.00 per hour Saturdays – 1.5x hourly rate Sundays – 2x hourly rate 7.30am to 5.00pm Unpaid lunch break included Early starts, occasional overtime and weekend work may be required Outdoor work in varying weather conditions Manual handling of equipment where necessary Uniform and PPE provided Training and Development The company is committed to developing its people.
