The cytology department within Synnovis Analytics based at Guy’s & St. Thomas’ Hospital continues to be one of the most exciting departments to develop your career. In addition to a robust non-gynae service, the department has also maintained a UKAS accredited Andrology service which covers 4 CCGs.

This laboratory based, but also patient focused role will give you job satisfaction that comes from knowing that no two days are the same.
There is a well-structured training programme and regular CPD meetings for all staff within Cytopathology to ensure that staff are developed to continue in the delivery of a high-quality Service.

The Cytology department is looking for a proficient, enthusiastic, self-motivated registered Biomedical Scientist to join the Synnovis Cytology team at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospital. The ideal candidate will be a quick learner, have an excellent attention to detail, be a good team player and keen to develop their scientific knowledge and skills through presentations and CPD activities.

Main duties of the job

The staff duties are planned on a rotational basis ensuring that staff are exposed to a variety of tasks including attending Fine Needle Aspiration clinics, semen analysis, Andrology reporting and performing a range of diagnostic tests on cytology samples.

The department provides scientists who perform cellularity assessments at the various FNA clinics within Guy’s and St. Thomas’ and King’s College Hospital Foundation Trusts.

The Specialist biomedical scientists assist the Senior Biomedical Scientists in the day-to-day running of the department.
You will be proficient in the use of Q-Pulse, have experience in Andrology, Non-gynae preparation for cytological analysis and the Fine Needle Aspiration service.

This role will suit a Biomedical Scientist with extensive experience in non-Gynae cytology preparation and Semen analysis.

Working for our organisation

The department is situated in a major teaching hospital, and referral centre. Processing over 10,000 non-gynae samples per year, the cytology department is currently in a dynamic state of growth with more FNA clinics set to be established resulting in more Non-gynae cases. With a well-managed on-site production facility, the Andrology Service currently has a daily capacity to accommodate about 25 patients and is undergoing further expansion.

The cytology department is looking for professional, enthusiastic, self-motivated State Registered Biomedical Scientists to join the Synnovis cytology team at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ and King’s College Hospitals

You will have a suite of learning opportunities available through The ACCE competencies programme, the Scientific Learning and Development Fund and the Synnovis Academy through which you can receive funding / support for advanced qualifications.

Through our Innovation Accelerator Fund, you can apply for finance to get that new innovative scientific project off the ground, and participate with the wider scientific community through symposiums, conferences and other peer group meetings.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

At Synnovis, we are currently shaping the future of pathology services by creating a world-leading Hub and Spoke pathology network with our NHS partners. A large part of this modernisation will involve moving 70% of our services to a purpose built, state of the art Hub laboratory in the heart of London. For now, the job you are applying for will be based at one of our hospital sites however, from 1 April 2024 our people and services will start to move to our Hub laboratory in Blackfriars, Southwark, SE1, with some work remaining in refurbished essential services laboratories across our hospital network, focusing on the rapid turnover of urgent tests. Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science
2. IBMS Certificate of Competence
3. HCPC State Registered
4. Evidence of participation in continuing professional development
5. Membership of the Institute of Biomedical Science

Desirable criteria

6. IBMS membership
7. Health & Safety qualification

Experience

Essential criteria

8. Preparation of Non-Gynae samples for diagnostic purposes.
9. Experience in Audits.
10. Full awareness of the medical laboratories’ requirement for quality and competence.
11. Previous experience in semen analysis
12. Experience in giving presentations at CPD meetings
13. Adapting readily to the changes associated with a dynamic working environment

Desirable criteria

14. Previous experience in cervical cytology screening
15. Experience in an Andrology Service
16. Experience in a Fine Needle aspiration service.
17. Experience of working in a large teaching Hospital
18. Experience in providing mentorship to trainee Biomedical Scientists and medical laboratory assistants.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria

19. Thorough practical knowledge of Cytopathology techniques.
20. Working knowledge of the maintenance and operation of cytology laboratory equipment.
21. High degree of numeracy and accuracy Good communication skills, both written and oral.
22. Ability to give presentations at CPD meetings
23. Good interpersonal and team working skills
24. Ability to adapt readily to the changes associated with a dynamic working environment.
25. Ability to organise and plan own workload
26. Good basic computer skills (Basic use of Microsoft Word and Excel)

Desirable criteria

27. Ability to undertake projects and ensure completion.
28. Ability to provide mentorship to Trainee Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants
