About the Role

UNSW’s Education Focussed (EF) roles enable academics to specialise in education and devote their time to delivering high-quality teaching and pursuing initiatives to enhance the educational experience of our students. Those who are appointed to this prestigious specialisation drive educational excellence within the university’s teaching and learning communities.


Department and Focus

The School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences is a large, collaborative and multi-disciplinary school in the Faculty of Science at the University of New South Wales. The school incorporates a broad range of disciplines, enabling comprehensive education and research in the fields of Earth Science, Environmental Science, Physical Geography, Climate Science, Evolutionary Biology, Ecology and Marine Science. The School is seeking to appoint a Lecturer (Level B) to conduct high quality teaching in courses that contribute to the Climate Science study areas, particularly the subjects CLIM1001/GENS0401 Introduction to Climate Change.


Teaching Expertise Areas

* The physical processes governing the Earth's climate system, including energy balance, atmospheric composition, and ocean–atmosphere interactions;
* Anthropogenic climate change, including the drivers, evidence, and projections of future climate scenarios;
* Environmental, social, and economic impacts of climate change, including risks to natural and human systems;
* Climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies, including policy, technological solutions, and behavioural responses.


Key Responsibilities

* Demonstrate and continuously develop a well‑defined teaching philosophy that inspires student learning;
* Conduct classes, assess student learning achievements and support students in undergraduate courses in line with UNSW policy;
* Design and develop learning activities and resources, and assessment and feedback using a range of suitable approaches and learning environments;
* Initiate the development of experimental approaches to teaching and learning with the support of more senior academics;
* Support learning progression with students as individuals (through such activities as one-to-one consultation);
* Support course administration, including academic quality assurance;
* Maintain professional development in pedagogy, disciplinary knowledge and minimum professional accreditation requirements (where relevant);
* Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others;
* Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.


Compensation and Contract

* Level B ($113k - $123k) plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
* Fixed Term – to 31 December 2026
* Full-time (35 hours per week)


Qualifications and Experience

* A PhD in the climate, environmental sciences, maths, physics, or related areas and/or relevant work experience;
* Actively stays up to date with discipline knowledge and professional development;
* Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design, development and delivery at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level;
* Experience using and/or designing with educational technologies and online delivery methods (e.g., Moodle and AI‑supported teaching tools);
* Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence;
* Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills;
* Evidence of ability to support and inspire students from diverse backgrounds and support student equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives;
* An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines;
* Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
