Job overview

The Lung cancer team is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Clinical Nurse Specialist to support leading our lung cancer team. The role is based within the Department for Respiratory Medicine but will involves multi-site working, including our Oncology ward and outpatient department and at our Outpatient Assessment Centre at South Walks House.

The successful applicant should be able to demonstrate clinical expertise, competence, confidence and be able to work within an autonomous and defined scope of practice. They should have advanced communication skills, organisational and multi-tasking skills and can prioritise effectively and efficiently.

The successful applicant must also demonstrate an ability to support, teach, develop, and educate others and possess and range of leadership skills. They should be able to work autonomously and work as part of a strong multidisciplinary team to maintain and deliver a high quality of care.


Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role include supporting the Lung ACP leading our lung cancer team along with our lung cancer lead physician. The post holder should be able to innovate and demonstrate clinical excellence. They will also be expected to support specialist clinics in lung cancer to provide high quality care to patients and their families.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

* Act as a role model demonstrating high standards of care and providing clinical leadership to others.
* To develop patient pathways and be responsible for leading and developing the nursing service.
* Work with the Multidisciplinary team to ensure that our cancer service complies with the national standards for safety and quality.
* To work autonomously and seek collaborative relationships with others across and within professional boundaries.
* To offer advice, support and education to clinical teams across the trust and network where appropriate.
* To offer the patient and families the skills of an experienced cancer CNS in all aspects of their care, including social and emotional needs.
* Deliver evidence based individualised patient care according to patient's changing health care needs, through holistic needs assessment (HNA).
* To provide expert knowledge and advice in own specialist area, ensuring maintenance of clinical excellence underpinned by evidence-based practice.


Person specification


Education, Qualifications and Training


Essential criteria

* Registered General Nurse
* First level degree in related subject
* Evidence of Masters level learning or prepared to work towards


Desirable criteria

* Research Qualification
* Post-basic qualification in cancer/palliative care or relevant subject
* Evidence of continued professional development
* Advanced Communications Skills Training or prepared to work towards
* Recognised teaching qualification or prepared to work towards


Knowledge and Experience


Essential criteria

* Relevant post registration experience, at Band 6 or above, in cancer, palliative care or other speciality
* Experience of teaching
* In-depth specialist training
* Experience of multiprofessional working
* Evidence of advanced communications skills
* Previous experience of working as a clinical nurse specialist
* Experience of audit and research
* Understanding of Macmillan Cancer Support and its’ role across the UK

* Leadership and management experience
* Ability to lead and influence change
