What are we looking for?
Essential
* Proven experience in public relations, communications, or journalism—ideally with examples of successful media engagement.
* Excellent writing and storytelling skills, especially for press releases, media pitches, and public statements.
* Confident in reaching out to journalists, editors, and media outlets with professionalism and persistence.
* Strong understanding of how to craft compelling messages tailored to different audiences and platforms.
* Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and adapt messaging to different channels (print, online, TV, radio).
Desirable
* Familiarity with the charity, social impact, or not-for-profit sectors.
* An understanding of disability awareness, accessibility, or inclusive communication (or a willingness to learn).
* Existing contacts in local or regional press and media, or experience building a media list.
* Knowledge of social media strategy or digital PR tools is a plus, though not required.
What will you be doing?
Ability Consultancy is a disability awareness not-for-profit company dedicated to promoting inclusion, understanding, and positive change through education, training, and advocacy. We work with businesses, educational institutions, and the wider community to challenge perceptions and support equitable opportunities for disabled individuals. The role includes:
* Help develop and execute a PR strategy that aligns with our mission and goals.
* Write and distribute press releases to local and regional press, TV, radio, and digital outlets.
* Pitch stories and newsworthy content to journalists, bloggers, and media contacts.
* Build and maintain a media contact database and relationships with key press and influencers.
* Collaborate with the team to identify compelling stories that showcase our work and impact.
* Provide advice on media engagement and reputation management.
