Support Officer - Young Adults/Adults (12 Months FTC) at The Brain Tumour Charity.
The Brain Tumour Charity is leading the way in research, support, and advocacy for everyone affected by brain tumours. Our mission is to accelerate a cure and improve life for everyone affected. The way people access support is evolving, and we are developing support services that reflect the complex needs of a brain tumour diagnosis using a range of platforms from a traditional phone line service to innovative, engaging and instant solutions. You will be passionate about improving the lives of those affected by a brain tumour, providing emotional and practical support and information across different channels, and presenting complex, scientific information in an accessible and personalised way. You will work flexibly and collaboratively across the Support Team.
Location: While contracted to our office in Fleet, Hampshire, our team supports a blend of office and home working with adequate broadband and IT capability, averaging 2-3 days in the office per week.
Working hours: 37.5 hours per week, with some out of hours work.
Salary: c. £30,550
Please note this role is covering parental leave for a 12 month fixed term contract.

Responsibilities
* Provide specialist emotional and practical support and information to people affected by brain tumours, their friends, families and carers through a variety of solutions including phone, email, webchat, online, social media and evolving channels
* Provide high quality information reflecting up-to-date research, clinical information and treatments in an accessible way; conduct research and adapt communication to the person supported
* Offer coaching guidance to empower individuals to achieve appropriate next steps
* Work with the Volunteer Development Manager to recruit, train and manage volunteers who assist in delivering support services
* Lead on cross-team projects and develop new resources to meet the community’s needs, collaborating with other teams and external partners
* Identify gaps in knowledge across the Support Team and identify possible training areas
* Develop information for our website and other resources, including drafting and reviewing information
* Plan and facilitate online and in-person events for the brain tumour community (including online meetups for young adults)
* Manage day-to-day operations of online peer support platforms, such as Facebook groups for Young Adults affected by a brain tumour diagnosis
* Support Young Ambassadors through coordinating activities, check-ins, meetings, and enabling meaningful input into our Young Adults Service
* Update and maintain accurate contact information in the CRM, and produce data reports to evidence impact and reach
* Identify, manage and escalate safeguarding concerns in line with The Charity guidelines
* Review day-to-day tasks across the Support Team
Experience
* Background experience in a supporter, helpline, health care, science or psychology related role
* Experience of communicating complicated subject matter to lay audiences in various formats
* Working in a support capacity, particularly with young people
* Project management experience
* Experience of working with patient and carer organisations
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to adapt communication styles for different audiences
* Proven listening and emotional support skills and a strong ability to empathise
* Solutions-focused with a positive ‘can do’ attitude
* Knowledge of health, the human brain, cancer or brain tumours
* Ability to prioritise and work under pressure with good time management
* Able to work flexibly and creatively to respond to emerging needs across the Support Team
* Good understanding of social media platforms and how people use them
* Self-reliant and competent IT user including digital platforms, data insights, internet, email, databases, spreadsheets, desktop publishing and MS Office
* A professional person with the social skills to deal with a range of stakeholders and the confidence to support people affected by brain tumours
* Understanding of databases and reporting functionality
