Band 4 Nurse Associate – Clinical Research Facility (CRF)

A new exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, dynamic nurse to join the core clinical research facility nursing team.

An ability to work days, evenings, night shifts and occasional weekends is a requirement of the job.


Specific Responsibilities

* Serve as the first point of call for staff with issues regarding patient admissions and discharges.
* Work autonomously and with the wider multidisciplinary team (MDT) to manage objectives set following daily board rounds and discharge team huddles.
* Communicate with ward coordinators, clerks and other Palatine departments to plan daily admission and discharge flows.
* Anticipate upcoming admissions and ensure pre‑treatment tests are completed; inform patients of admission times.
* Identify potential complex patients at board rounds and support ward staff with timely referrals.
* Update each ward patient’s EDD and reason to reside status on CWP after daily board rounds.
* Ensure effective communication with patients and families regarding discharge planning.
* Discuss sensitive issues such as personal and emotional care needs with confidentiality and respect.
* Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, huddles and contribute to discharge planning.
* Coordinate with the discharge and supportive care teams to uphold end‑of‑life care principles and hygiene requirements.
* Develop and maintain effective working relationships with all MDT members for holistic patient care.
* Share up‑to‑date discharge information with relevant staff, patients and families.
* Encourage patients and families in care planning, overcoming barriers and ensuring dignity and respect.
* Support nursing staff with clinical tasks within scope of practice and maintain mandatory training and development.
* Contribute to ongoing improvement of discharge processes across the organisation.
* Exercise safeguarding awareness and act on concerns appropriately.
* Work collaboratively within scope of own practice.
* Assist Band 2s and Band 3s in care provision and promote essential training as per trust policy.
* Complete hygiene checklists electronically and conduct regular audits to maintain outstanding care and documentation.
* Uphold the Trust’s values and behaviours, maintaining public confidence and excellent care experience.
* Show willingness to undertake additional skills and training as required by the department.
* Engage in reflective practice, management of self, and reflection on own reactions and responses.
* Recognise and operate within limits of competence.


Promoting Health and Preventing Ill Health

* Support people to improve and maintain their physical, mental health and wellbeing.
* Understand caring for individuals with additional needs such as dementia, mental illness, or learning disabilities.


Providing and Monitoring Health

* Utilise a wide range of communication methods – verbal, non‑verbal and written – to interact with patients, carers and the multinational team.
* Adapt communication methods, including technology, to meet needs of individuals with sensory or communication difficulties.
* Assist the registered nurse in assessment, planning, management and evaluation of care.
* Demonstrate competencies in clinical skills such as catheterisation, venepuncture, CVC access, clinical observation, fluid balance and ECGs.
* Maintain clear and accurate patient records using digital and paper systems.
* Ensure privacy, dignity and safety of individuals at all times.
* Recognise changing priorities and seek advice from the Registered Nurse as required.
* Maintain high standards of nursing care; raise concerns when standards degrade, following local policy and procedures.
* Evaluate care effectiveness and liaise with the Registered Nurse to agree changes to plans of care.
* Administer medications competently within local policy and in line with NMC Standards of Proficiency.
* Respond promptly to emergencies, seeking support from the Registered Nurse.
* Comply with GDPR, the Code of Confidentiality and Caldicott principles.


Working in Teams

* Provide clinical care in inpatient settings as supported by the Registered Nurse or other registered care professional.
* Collaborate with others to ensure safe and timely discharge, avoiding readmission.
* Carry out delegated clinical tasks to a high standard, under appropriate supervision.
* Deliver care independently when required and within defined parameters of the Nursing Associate role.
* Support newly qualified staff, students, new starters and trainee Nursing Associates, fostering learning environments.
* Supervise healthcare assistants to promote their development within their role.
* Engage in a full variety of shifts to meet service needs.
* Communicate effectively across channels with patients, families, public, and health professionals.
* Contribute to team success and constructively challenge others.
* Provide clear verbal, digital or written information when delegating or handing over care responsibilities.


Improving Safety and Quality

* Participate in Trust initiatives such as the CODE Accreditation audit.
* Report accidents or incidents via the Datix process and raise safeguarding concerns per policy.
* Use the Freedom to Speak up guardian to raise concerns in a safe environment.
* Maintain clear, concise, accurate and legible records and communications in line with local and national guidance.
* Treat patient‑related information sensitively and uphold confidentiality principles.
* Improve care quality by contributing to continuous monitoring of patients’ experience of care.
* Identify safety risks and take appropriate action, prioritising patients’ best interests.
* Escalate safety, safeguarding or risk concerns to appropriate staff for action.
* Participate in audit and review of patient care.
* Prevent and control infections within the Trust, ensuring compliance with hand washing, uniform, and MRSA screening policies.


Contributing to Integrated Care

* Act as an advocate for patients and families, protecting their interests, privacy and inclusion.
* Show flexibility to work across areas or departments to meet service demands.
* Contribute to care provision for people with complex needs.
* Understand roles of other professionals and carers across organisations and settings.
* Communicate and collaborate across all healthcare settings.
