As the business continues to scale, the company is looking to hire a commercially minded Legal Counsel to take ownership of market data licensing and related commercial matters across the platform.
This is a high‑impact role offering close interaction with investment, data, technology, and compliance teams in a fast‑moving hedge fund environment.
The Role
The successful candidate will act as the primary legal contact for all exchange and non‑exchange market data matters, supporting the business on the sourcing, use, and governance of data critical to investment and research activities.
Key responsibilities include:
* Advising on and negotiating exchange market data licences, including permitted use, display vs non‑display, and internal distribution.
* Supporting licensing of non‑exchange and third‑party data, including reference data, indices, benchmarks, and alternative data sets.
* Advising front office, research, and quantitative teams on data usage, restrictions, and compliance with licence terms.
* Partnering with procurement and market data teams on vendor negotiations, renewals, and cost‑control initiatives.
* Supporting internal controls, audits, and governance relating to market data usage.
* Working closely with Compliance and Risk on regulatory considerations connected to data use.
* Providing pragmatic, solutions‑focused legal advice in a lean, in‑house hedge fund environment.
About You
Our client is seeking a lawyer who combines strong technical market data expertise with the confidence to operate directly with senior stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
* UK qualification as a solicitor (or equivalent common law qualification).
* Approximately 4-12 years' PQE.
* In‑house experience at a hedge fund, asset manager, bank, or market infrastructure provider, or relevant prior experience from private practice.
* Demonstrable experience advising on:
* Exchange market data licensing
* Non‑exchange / third‑party data agreements
* A strong understanding of how market data is used by:
* Investment teams
* Research and analytics functions
* The ability to translate legal risk into commercial, operational advice.
* A hands‑on, pragmatic mindset suited to a growing investment platform.
