Working arrangements: Monday to Thursday (09:00‑17:00) and Friday (09:00‑16:30). Standby rota covering out of hours from 6 pm to 6 am, all day Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays on rotation.

Contract type: 1 x Permanent, 1 x Fixed Term for 2 years. Flexible working arrangements are available.
Suitable for secondment: Employees wishing to be considered for secondment should agree with their head of service before submitting an application form (Fixed Term post only).

About the Post
Two full‑time Homeless Prevention Officer positions are open: one generic and one domestic abuse specialist. The roles involve providing a comprehensive, customer‑focussed housing options service to prevent homelessness and enabling the council to meet its statutory duties under the Homelessness Reduction Act and Part VII Housing Act 1996.
Responsibilities
* Provide comprehensive housing advice and manage a varied caseload.
* Work proactively to prevent homelessness, helping households remain in their homes or secure suitable accommodation.
* Carry out assessments, develop personalised housing plans and deliver prevention and relief duties.
* Use a strengths‑based, trauma‑informed approach to support people in accessing appropriate housing and sustaining tenancies.
* Collaborate with internal services and external agencies, including the domestic abuse service, refuges, social care, health and criminal justice partners.
* Carry out home visits and attend other Barnsley locations as required.
Qualifications & Requirements
* Strong verbal and written communication skills.
* Working knowledge of homelessness, domestic abuse support or experience of the criminal justice system.
* Excellent team player, able to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
* Experience of casework and advocacy is essential.
* Relevant Level 4 qualification or equivalent experience.
* Basic Criminal Record Check is required.
* Ability to speak English to an appropriate standard.
* Availability outside normal working hours as part of a standby rota.
* Reasonable account of any significant periods (6 months or more in the past 3 years) of living abroad.
* Prepared to start with all necessary legal documents, such as a valid visa. The council cannot provide visa sponsorship.
