About the role
In this role as Marine Electrical Engineer, you will provide critical electrical and electronic engineering support across all floating plant within Forth Ports. The focus is on maintaining key navigational and vessel systems — including VHF, AIS, and GPS — to ensure operational reliability and safety. The successful candidate will carry out all maintenance and repair tasks efficiently and promptly, in full compliance with safety procedures and marine standards.
Key responsibilities:
1. Carry out planned maintenance programmes for each vessel, including electrical and basic engineering tasks. Respond promptly to breakdowns, work proactively, and demonstrate the ability to operate both independently and as part of a team. Resolve issues efficiently to ensure timely completion of all work.
2. Ensure all equipment is maintained to the standards required by the MCA and BV, and that all associated records and documentation are kept up to date.
3. Ensure the availability of required tools, spare parts, and materials to complete scheduled maintenance and repair tasks effectively.
4. Maintain regular and effective communication with vessel crews and service providers to keep them informed of repair progress. Address issues promptly and escalate any unresolved problems to the Marine Engineering Manager – Marine Craft.
5. Respond promptly to operational issues both during working hours and when on call outside of normal hours, taking appropriate action to minimise any impact on operations.
6. Take full responsibility for ensuring all work is carried out in compliance with Health and Safety regulations, as well as company and departmental policies.
7. Report any Health and Safety concerns to the Manager – Marine Craft.
8. Assist the Manager – Marine Craft in the investigation of accidents, incidents, and equipment breakdowns, and contribute to appropriate corrective actions.
9. Prepare and maintain accurate departmental records, including attendance, work tasks, and other relevant information.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for a practical, safety-conscious, and technically skilled individual with strong experience in marine electrical systems. You will need to be comfortable working in a hands-on environment, both independently and as part of a small, responsive team. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a calm, methodical approach under pressure and a commitment to ensuring the safe and effective operation of all floating plant across our Scottish Ports.
Flexibility is essential, as there will be a regular requirement to travel in support of our Scottish operations on a weekly basis.
Skills & Qualifications:
10. Experience in basic plant engineering and small vessel engineering.
11. Comprehensive electrical experience across 12V, 24V, V, and V systems.
12. Strong knowledge of electrical control systems, including alternators, starter motors, engine alarm systems, navigation equipment, and all accommodation and lighting circuits on floating plant.
13. Experience supporting vessel preparation for surveys and inspections conducted by the MCA or other statutory bodies.
14. Basic mechanical knowledge of small boat operations, including propeller, shaft, and bearing removal and replacement, as well as engine removal and installation.
15. Full right to work in the UK.
16. Full UK driving licence.
