Locum Anaesthetic Consultant General - 10 Months
This post will hold a line on the 1/12 on call rota at ST Helier Hospital

The Epsom & St Helier Anaesthetic department is aligned with the St George's Hospital teaching programme for medical students and the SW Thames School of Anaesthesia training programme. We have ACSA accreditation. There is a well-established simulation teaching programme which may give opportunities for suitably qualified applicants. We score highly each year in the national hip fracture database report and are one of the busiest 5 units in London. Our National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA) pathway and patient outcomes score as excellent.
Main duties of the job
Principle Duties of the Post
The principal duty of this post is to provide a comprehensive clinical service to patients:
1. To always, comply with the GMC’s guidance on ‘Good Medical Practice’ as amended or
substituted from time to time.
2. To ensure that patient confidentiality is always maintained.
3. To undertake duties as defined within the attached job plan in so far as practicable and in
agreement with your Clinical Director.
4. To be responsible and managerially accountable for the reasonable and effective use of Trust
resources that you use and influence, and professionally accountable to the Medical Director.
5. On commencement to ensure personal attendance at the Trust’s corporate Induction (or
arranged Consultant Induction).
6. To participate in the Trust’s Statutory & Mandatory training programme.
7. To be responsible for the Clinical Management of in and outpatients under your care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. To share responsibility with other Consultants for the recruitment, appointment and
supervision of junior medical staff in accordance with Trust policies.
2. To devote time on a regular basis for teaching and training of junior medical staff, contributing
as appropriate to post-graduate and continuing medical education.
3. To devote time, through agreement on a regular basis for teaching and training of medical
students as part of agreed teaching arrangements with the Foundation School.
4. We have an active teaching program for undergraduates as well as our junior doctors. We
participate in our highly regarded Elena Power Simulation Centre. In the trust we also train
paramedics in airway skills.
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
1. Hold a medical qualification or qualification registered with the GMC
2. Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or be within six months of obtaining CCT/CESR or equivalent
3. ALS training
4. EPALS / APLS training
Desirable criteria
5. SIA stage 3 experience in peri- operative medicine for high risk patients
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
6. Broad range of experience in delivering anaesthesia for elective and emergency surgery for patients of all ages
Management experience
Essential criteria
7. Has attended a recognised management training event or will have such training on completion of CCT/CESR
8. Ability to organise inpatient and outpatient waiting lists
Desirable criteria
9. Familiarity with issues of service organisation and development
Teaching Skills
Essential criteria
10. Broad range teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
11. Ability to teach clinical skills
Desirable criteria
12. Experience of supervising junior doctors
Research Experience
