Job Title: Student Engagement Officer

Grade: Grade 6

Salary: £32,080 – £34,610 per annum

Hours: Full Time

Department: Student Success

Reporting to: Senior Student Engagement Officer


Purpose of the Post

This role supports the University’s strategic commitment to ensuring students achieve positive outcomes across their programmes of study. The Student Engagement Team acts as a central point of connection between key institutional objectives and initiatives designed to foster student success.


Main Responsibilities

* Provide and maintain on‑campus and online delivery of information, advice and guidance for students regarding academic‑related and personal issues, meeting with students individually or in small groups.
* Draft Individual Learning Plans for students identified as at‑risk, in consultation with Programme Leaders, and follow up to ensure completion.
* Use attendance‑monitoring systems and in‑year assessment results to identify students at risk of under‑achieving.
* Maintain a referral system for self‑referrals and staff referrals, review academic progress, support goal setting and provide targeted advice.
* Proactively work with academic faculties to identify students who may benefit from targeted intervention, develop initiatives to support at‑risk students, and engage students to boost attainment.
* Monitor caseloads, engage positively with students to understand their circumstances, and connect them with appropriate academic, pastoral, financial and personal support.
* Collaborate with the Deputy Director of Student Engagement and Outcomes to analyze in‑year data, identify attainment gaps, and share insights with support providers such as Learning Development, Library, e‑Learning, etc.
* Use in‑year assessment data to identify students near grade boundaries and implement proactive interventions.
* Attend and contribute to the weekly “Cause for Concern” meetings, providing engagement insight and developing support plans when necessary.
* Design and draft a concise Study Essentials monthly newsletter for all students, including direct booking links to academic support activities.
* Support students mandated to access the Student Engagement team and report engagement levels to relevant committees, boards and panels.
* Conduct impact analysis of casework interventions periodically throughout the academic year.
* Support students with assessment re‑sits, and manage re‑sit support during the two weeks prior to the re‑sit deadline.
* Support the Director of Student Engagement and Outcomes with design and implementation of onboarding and welcome activities, including the ‘Heads’ pre‑arrival programme.
* Assist the Student Success Directorate with planning, administration and implementation of student transition programmes and other outward‑facing activities.
* Maintain accurate case records, produce reports for departmental and institutional dissemination, and support internal and external awareness of the Student Engagement team.
* Evaluate service user statistics and experience using appropriate surveys and maintain a service user database to interrogate data.
* Support specific intervention projects relating to engagement, attainment and outcomes, and assist with Open Days and recruitment events when requested.
* Ensure compliance with health & safety, confidentiality, safeguarding and data protection policies.

Person Specification – Educational Qualifications

* Essential: A relevant degree or experience within higher education supporting students.
* Desirable: Professional coaching qualification or relevant coaching experience.

* Essential: Experience providing academic and personal guidance to higher education students, including one‑on‑one or small‑group interactions.
* Essential: Experience monitoring and managing a caseload of students, identifying those at risk of under‑achieving and intervening proactively.
* Essential: Proven ability to collaborate with key stakeholders to develop targeted interventions.
* Essential: Experience using data (attendance, virtual learning environments, etc.) to identify and address students at risk of under‑performing.
* Essential: Experience drafting evaluative reports for student support services and presenting findings to stakeholders.
* Essential: Experience producing communication material to engage students with academic support opportunities.
* Essential: Strong understanding of the student life cycle and challenges encountered by diverse students.
* Essential: Experience supporting onboarding, transition programmes or student‑focused events.
* Desirable: Experience using platforms such as Seats for monitoring student engagement.


Person Specification – Key Skills and Competencies

* Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage with a diverse range of students, staff and stakeholders.
* Ability to identify challenges affecting students’ academic progression and devise meaningful solutions collaboratively.
* Skilled in using university data to identify trends, track progress and inform proactive decision‑making.
* Strong attention to detail in maintaining accurate case records, managing interventions and ensuring confidentiality.
* Ability to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities concurrently.
* Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills to provide guidance, contribute to meetings and prepare reports.
* Ability to design and implement student engagement initiatives and proactive support plans that positively influence academic outcomes.
