About the Role:
The Senior Director of Software Engineering serves as the Technology Leader for the UK and is a key member of the UK Senior Leadership Team (SLT). In this capacity, you will partner closely with the UK General Manager, Gerry Duffy, and his team to align technology initiatives with business goals. This role represents the UK technology function within regional governance forums, ensuring technology considerations are embedded in business decision making .
You will contribute to the formulation of regional and global technology strategies, ensuring UK priorities both align with and inform enterprise technology direction, in close collaboration with the Global Technology Organization (GTO) and Product leadership.
This role reports directly to Philippe Poignant, CTO Legal Market.
Job Summary
* Build long term strategic plans and oversee the organization’s budget, investment priorities, and resource planning for the UK technology organization.
* Direct the definition and implementation of customer and business requirements while shaping a clear product and platform vision that supports the full lifecycle of key systems.
* Develop local leaders to build senior leadership bench strength, organizational resilience, and a strong engineering culture.
* Represent the technology function within the UK SLT, ensuring seamless communication between technical and business stakeholders.
* Drive the strategic evolution of the UK organization and its engineering processes by identifying and implementing Generative AI (GenAI) and automation solutions to accelerate software delivery, streamline internal workflows, and enhance the value of legal technology products.
* Ensure technology activities are conducted in compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, enterprise risk management frameworks, and internal policies, proactively identifying and managing technology risks relevant to the UK market.
Key Responsibilities
UK Leadership & Strategy
* Partner with MD Gerry Duffy and the UK leadership team to solve complex business challenges and drive regional growth.
* Contribute to enterprise and regional technology strategy development, anticipating long term technology needs and ensuring UK delivery aligns with broader business and product strategies.
Operational & Engineering Excellence
* Make short and long term decisions regarding product and platform development strategies in alignment with overall GTO, GPO and business objectives .
* Champion modern software engineering practices to improve speed, quality, and reliability.
* Be accountable for the quality, scalability, and maintainability of technical solutions through adherence to engineering best practices and architectural governance in alignment with GTO practices .
* Meet or exceed operational targets, service level agreements (SLAs), and quality, cost, and reliability expectations for the UK market.
Technical Governance & Risk
* Lead the development of technical standards in alignment with Global Technology directions and perform reviews to ensure architectural processes are followed.
Financial & Resource Management
* Lead and manage teams of both internal and external technology resources.
* Own and execute the UK technology operating and capital budgets, ensuring responsible use of resources.
* Identify opportunities for cost optimization, productivity gains, and operational efficiencies through automation, process improvement, and effective vendor management.
People Leadership & Talent Development
* Interview, hire, and develop engineering leaders and teams, providing regular feedback and coaching to support performance and growth.
* Shape organizational culture and develop future leaders to build sustained leadership capability and succession strength across the UK technology organization.
Stakeholder & Customer Engagement
* Work directly with customers and end users, providing design input, strategic consultation, and support during critical incidents or service disruptions.
* Act as a senior technology advisor to business stakeholders, translating complex technical concepts into clear business impacts and trade offs.
Technical Skills & Expertise
* Strategic Planning: Expertise in technology lifecycle management, product and platform vision, and the use of technical metrics to inform business decisions.
* Software Development: Expert knowledge of modern development methodologies and awareness of emerging industry technology trends.
* AI & Automation: Strong experience leveraging GenAI, automation, and advanced analytics to drive productivity and innovation.
* Architecture & Data: Strong knowledge of architectural principles, content platforms, complex data models, and AI enabled services.
* Resource Models: Proven experience with managed services, staff augmentation, and offshore partnership development.
Education & Experience
* Experience: 15+ years of software development experience with at least 7+ years in senior technology leadership roles.
* Education: BS in Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience required ; advanced degree preferred.
* Soft Skills: Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence senior executives and diverse international stakeholders.
