Job overview

This is an exciting time for a consultant in intensive care to join a growing department in a hospital into which emergency services are being centralised.

The post holder will complement and develop existing services through the provision of specialist knowledge & expertise in intensive care medicine. The post holder is therefore required to have full registration with the General Medical Council & a valid licence to practice and be on the specialist register for intensive care medicine or be within 6 months of CCT or equivalent at the time of interview.


Main duties of the job

* Leading the care of critically unwell patients in the intensive care unit
* Formulating management plans, updating relatives, performing and supervising practical procedures
* Assessment of patients referred to the intensive care unit from the ward, ED or operating theatre and decision making regarding appropriateness of intensive care admission
* Airway management of all adult patients in the hospital outside the operating theatre
* Supervision and training of trainee doctors, clinical fellows and specialty doctors
* Contribution to the running and management of the intensive care unit so that the highest possible quality of care is delivered to our patients

Person specification


Qualifications

* Full registration with the General Medical Council with a valid license to practice
* FFICM, EDIC or equivalent
* Inclusion on the specialist register / Admission to the register within 6 months of interview (dual or joint CCT in Intensive Care Medicine or equivalent)
* Primary medical degree
* Evidence of Accredited Clinical & Educational Supervision of Medical Learners


Knowledge & Skills

* Wide experience in Intensive Care Medicine
* Broad experience in the management of all aspects of Intensive Care Medicine
* Good understanding of Clinical Governance
* Evidence of audit work and where this has brought about change
* Research Skills: Publication of research articles, demonstrating understanding of research methodology and commitments
* Skills in critical care echocardiography and ultrasound
* Evidence of relevant peer reviewed papers and other publications (e.g., book chapter, book editor, case report – not abstracts or letters)


Skills & Abilities

* Proven ability to build and maintain effective teams
* Positive attitude towards members of the wider healthcare team
* Evidence of good organisational and leadership skills
* Evidence of development and management of change
* Ability to manage risk and end of life decisions.
* An understanding of management in the context of the Health Service
* Able to manage and lead change internally and within multi-agency setting
* Attendance at management course
