Job summary We are seeking an experienced HCPC-registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join the Clinical Biochemistry team at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSussex). This is a fully rotational post across Automation at the Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH) and Princess Royal Hospital (PRH), and Specialist Biochemistry at RSCH. The department is UKAS accredited and holds IBMS approval for Registration and Specialist Portfolio training. You will join a supportive, forward-thinking team delivering a high-quality routine and specialist service. The automated section uses Roche Cobas 8000 analysers with C8100 pre-analytics. Specialist Biochemistry provides a diverse repertoire including ICP-MS trace metals, toxicology, first trimester screening, protein electrophoresis, and manual assays, supported by advanced platforms such as LC-MS/MS, GC-MS, ICP-MS, electrophoresis, immunofixation and FTIR-ATR. The role involves performing a wide range of complex investigations using manual, semi-automated and automated techniques to support diagnosis and patient management. Participation in a 24/7 shift rota, including nights, weekends and bank holidays, is required. Applications are welcomed from HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientists, including Band 5 staff nearing completion (>=75%) of their IBMS Specialist Portfolio. Main duties of the job Analyses samples according to the departmental Standard Operating Procedures (including the requesting of tests and reporting of results) using highly complex analysers, or performing highly complex techniques and informs senior staff of any proposed changes to SOP's. Undertakes/oversees planned preventative maintenance on highly complex, expensive and specialised analysers to ensure correct functioning. Records problems and troubleshoots or refers to senior members of staff. Prioritises workload according to national guidelines. Understands the clinical urgency of requests and the impact on patient care (i.e. the 4hr wait in A&E). Performs calibrations on all methods, informs senior staff of any problems. Performs and verifies quality control samples (including checking quality control charts) to ensure accuracy and precision. Carries out corrective action to ensure all analyses are performing within defined parameters. Understands the use of statistical parameters for mean and SD. Performs external quality assurance analysis on highly specialised analysers Participates in out-of-hours arrangements, when assessed as competent to do so to provide a 24/7 emergency and routine biochemistry service. Undertakes analytical validation of results produced Checks all samples before processing for status & suitability Interprets results and clinical history to ensure patients receive correct therapy.
