About the role
Based at 100 Temple Street. Hybrid working available following a successful probation period.
A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a motivated and experienced Money Adviser to join Bristol City Council’s Welfare Rights and Money Advice Service (WRAMAS). This role supports the council to deliver its core duties towards our most vulnerable citizens.
What will I be doing?
You will visit vulnerable citizens at home and other locations across the city to provide a high‑quality debt advice service.
You will provide consultancy advice to other professionals supporting their clients, such as support workers, social workers and housing officers.
You will manage your own caseload, providing clients with debt advice and a pro‑active casework service to better manage their finances. This will include insolvency outcomes such as Debt Relief Orders (DROs).
What does a typical week look like?
* Be on duty for one day a week; triaging incoming referrals over the phone/email and providing one‑off advice to professionals. On this day you will be office based with a small team of other WRAMAS advisers on duty.
* Visit clients at home and other locations to conduct initial interviews and gather evidence. You will arrange and manage your diary independently.
* Liaise with creditors and other council teams.
* Progress your cases to a successful resolution, including submitting Debt Relief Order applications.
Less frequently you will:
* Develop and deliver training to other council teams and commissioned partner organisations.
* Engage in social policy work, gathering evidence to support consultancies and feeding into service development.
* Write articles for our regular newsletter.
* Attend liaison meetings on behalf of the service.
* Deliver outreach sessions at community venues across the city.
What do I need to have?
* A good knowledge of debt recovery law and procedures.
* A good knowledge of the welfare benefits system.
* Good communication and negotiation skills, including the ability to converse with vulnerable citizens who have significant communication barriers and to negotiate with creditors and advocate on behalf of your clients.
* The ability to confidently manage and progress your own workload.
Enhanced DBS Check required.
Benefits and support
You will receive membership of the Local Government Pension scheme and a generous annual leave allowance.
