Derby Public Health Department is a forward-looking team with ambitions to improve the health and wellbeing of our city's population and reduce health inequalities through working collaboratively with local people, communities and partners.
The post would suit applicants who are an existing Consultant in Public Health/ Public Health Medicine. Applications from candidates within the final six months of speciality training are also welcome. Applicants going through the portfolio registration routes (GMC or UKPHR) are not eligible to be shortlisted for interview until they are included on the register. The six-month rule does not apply to these portfolio route applicants
The Consultant in Public Health/ Public Health Medicine is a key role within the Public Health Team reporting to the Director of Public Health and sitting within the Public Health Senior Management Team.
This is an exciting opportunity as it is anticipated that the post will be based part-time within the Public Health Team of the Council and based part-time within Royal Derby Hospital, working to improve the health and wellbeing of local people, improve access to, and outcomes of, health and care services and to promote equity and preventive action.
We may have the opportunity to appoint a second post, if this is the case it will be confirmed at interview.
The Opportunity
In the role of Consultant in Public Health/ Public Health Medicine, here's an example of what you'll be doing to make an impact:
You will provide strategic and system leadership across the breadth of public health programmes as necessary, but you with particular responsibility for our children and young people and sexual health programmes of work. Should we recruit a second post, this will have a remit across a range of public health programmes within the department.
Uniquely, it is anticipated that a postholder will work part-time with University Hospitals of Derby and Burton to provide public health expertise and leadership to our colleagues at Royal Derby Hospital.
Some key responsibilities of the role of Consultant in Public Health/ Public Health Medicine include:
* Ensuring the effective delivery of the public health services – for example, sexual health services - such that the full range of benefits are delivered to residents of the authority.
* Working with partners and providing leadership within the local health and care system to maximise health improvement opportunities and the reduction of inequalities in health outcomes amongst residents.
* Leading on improving health and social outcomes for a particular client groups as required.
* Working across organisational and professional boundaries acting as a change agent managing complexity to deliver improvements in health and wellbeing.
* Providing expert public health support and whole system leadership to ensure an evidence-based approach for commissioning and developing high quality equitable services, within and across a range of organisations including voluntary, public and private sector.
* Supporting the Director of Public Health in the development and implementation of robust strategies for improving the health and wellbeing of local communities including ensuring qualitative and/or quantitative measurements are in place to demonstrate improvements.
* Actively contribute to the training programme for Foundation Year Doctors/ Specialty Registrars in Public Health and other trainees as appropriate.
About You
To be successful in this role, you'll ideally have...
* Inclusion in the GMC Full and Specialist Register with a license to practice/GDC Specialist List or inclusion in the UK Public Health Register (UKPHR) for Public Health Specialists at the point of application (Public health specialty registrar applicants who are not yet on the GMC Specialist Register, UKPHR register or GDC Specialist List in dental public health must provide verifiable signed documentary evidence that they are within 6 months of gaining entry to a register at the date of interview).
Applicants going through the portfolio registration routes (GMC or UKPHR) are not eligible to be shortlisted for interview until they are included on the register. The six-month rule does not apply to these portfolio route applicants.
* The minimum CPD requirements (i.e. be up to date) in accordance with Faculty of Public Health requirements or other recognised body.
* MFPH by examination, by exemption or by assessment, or equivalent.
* The ability to influence senior members including directors and CEOs.
* Commitment to work within a political system irrespective of personal political affiliations.
* The ability to think strategically with proven leadership skills and operational nous
* The ability to demonstrate and motivate organisations to contribute to improving the public's health and wellbeing through mainstream activities and within resources.
* In depth understanding of the health and care system and the relationships with both local national government.
* In depth knowledge of methods of developing clinical quality assurance, quality improvement, evaluations and evidence based public health practice.
