About this job

A Vacancy at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust.

Working as a Maternity Care Assistant (MCA) in a maternity scanning department is a deeply rewarding role that blends administrative efficiency with high-level emotional intelligence.

You are essentially the "glue" that holds the clinic together, ensuring the clinical team can focus on the scans while the patients feel seen, heard, and supported.

Core Responsibilities

* Patient Care & Advocacy
Welcome patients, manage their anxiety, and explain the appointment flow.
* Chaperoning
Act as a chaperone during intimate ultrasound examinations to ensure comfort and safety of the patient and sonographer.
* Clinical Support
o Room Readiness – Ensure scan rooms are stocked with necessary supplies and equipment is cleaned between patients.
o Basic Observations – Take observations such as blood pressure, height/weight (BMI), and urinalysis.
o Flow Management – Keep sonographers on schedule by preparing the next patient and handling previous patient paperwork.
o Venepuncture – Perform and record venepuncture when required.
* Administrative Duties
o Record Keeping – Update patient records on hospital systems (Badgernet).
o Clinical & Technical Support – Attend scans to provide a witness and support; maintain dignity and modesty.
o Data Entry – Accurately input scan measurements and findings into maternity software systems.
o Liaising with Teams – Communicate with Antenatal Clinic, Community Midwives, and Delivery Suite to ensure seamless care.
o Result Tracking – Ensure screening bloods are correctly labelled and sent to the lab promptly.
* Patient & Emotional Management
o Managing News – Escort patients to quiet rooms following a difficult scan result and stay with them until a midwife is available.
o Information Sharing – Provide relevant literature on screening, nutrition, and next steps in the maternity journey.
o Aseptic Cleaning – Deep‑clean ultrasound probes and couches between every patient following infection control protocols.
o Stock Control – Monitor and order specialised supplies like ultrasound gel, thermal paper for photos, and clinical gowns.
* Documentation
Accurately record and manage documentation throughout the day.

Values and Commitment

Our Poppy’s Promise Commitment: We believe that compassionate care sits at the heart of everything we do.

Every member of our team, clinical or non‑clinical, plays a vital role in ensuring patients, families, and colleagues are treated with dignity, empathy, and respect at all times.

We expect all staff to demonstrate compassion not only through their words but through actions: listening attentively, communicating clearly and kindly, and recognising individual needs.

Effective communication is central to safe and high‑quality healthcare.

We value colleagues who take the time to understand others, explain information in a meaningful way, and respond to concerns with patience and understanding.

By joining our team, you commit to uphold these values, ensuring every patient feels heard, respected, and valued, and that compassion is embedded in every interaction, every day.

Hospital Transformation Programme (HTP)

Our Service will relocate to The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in 2028 as part of HTP, bringing specialist services together in a modern, purpose‑built facility to improve patient care and team experience.

We are actively recruiting, and successful candidates will be expected to move with the Service in early 2028. The relocation will follow a formal management of change process, including full consultation and support for staff.
