Independent Technical Assessor – Hardness Calibration
About UKAS
The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) is the national accreditation body for the UK. We assess organisations that provide testing, calibration, inspection, and certification services, ensuring they meet internationally recognised standards. Our work supports confidence in conformance assessment across sectors and helps maintain the highest level of technical competence and impartiality.
The Role
We are seeking experienced professionals to join our pool of Technical Assessors (TAs) specialising in Hardness Calibration. As a TA, you will support UKAS in assessing organisations against relevant standards, ensuring technical competence and impartiality in their operations. This is a flexible, freelance‑style role that allows you to contribute your expertise while maintaining your current employment.
Key responsibilities include:
* Planning and conducting assessments of conformance assessment bodies working in mechanical calibration, specifically hardness calibration.
* Reviewing technical documentation and procedures for calibration of hardness testing machines, hardness calibration machines, reference blocks, and indenters.
* Evaluating compliance with standards such as ISO 6506, ISO 6507, ISO 6508, ISO 4545, ISO 48‑9, and ISO/IEC 17025.
* Providing expert input to support accreditation decisions and reporting findings accurately.
What We’re Looking For
We welcome applications from individuals with:
* Practical experience in calibrating hardness indenters, reference blocks, testing and calibration hardness machines, or indentation measuring devices.
* Knowledge and application of hardness testing machines and calibration equipment, including associated instruments (e.g. force proving devices, indentation measuring systems, depth measuring systems, stage micrometers and laser interferometers).
* Awareness of standards and specifications relevant to hardness calibration, including ISO 6506, ISO 6507, ISO 6508, ISO 4545, ISO 48‑9, and ISO/IEC 17025 which sets out the general requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories.
* Understanding of the uncertainty of measurement contributions affecting results of calibrations.
* Qualifications such as a Degree, City & Guilds, HNC, ONC, or BTech in a physical science or engineering/metrology based discipline are considered appropriate, though not mandatory.
* Professional membership is not required, but a commitment to maintaining high standards is essential.
Personal attributes valued by UKAS include:
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects.
* A diplomatic and open‑minded approach to assessment.
* Commitment to upholding the highest standards of quality and impartiality.
Contract Details
* This is a freelance, subcontractor role, designed to fit around your existing professional commitments.
* You may undertake assessments alongside your full‑time employment.
* Day rates are competitive and paid per assessment, including preparation and reporting time.
