Locum consultant in Paediatric Dentistry

The closing date is 11 February 2026

The successful post holder will be appointed as a locum Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry to the sessions advertised and under the employment of the Birmingham Children's Hospital NHS Trust.

The priority for this post is to support and maintain the Paediatric Dentistry Consultant Service for patients referred from hospital colleagues, general medical and dental practitioners, and colleagues across the region. Patients may also be referred from other tertiary care providers.

The Paediatric Dentistry Service at Birmingham Children's Hospital accepts referrals of children with complex comorbidities. The service provides paediatric dental support for all medical and surgical specialties including cardiology, inherited metabolic diseases, oncology and haematology.

In addition, the hospital is a designated regional and supra regional center for cleft, craniofacial surgery, cardiothoracic surgery (hypoplastic left heart syndrome), dermatology (epidermolysis bullosa), complex liver disease and liver transplantation, and is the national center for paediatric small bowel transplantation.

Well-established paediatric dental pathways exist within all these services.


Main duties of the job

* Co-ordination of the Paediatric Dentistry Services within the Children's Hospital, working in close liaison with NHS Consultants Sarah McKaig, Ajit Tanday and Alison James.
* Coordination of paediatric dental services with other secondary care providers.
* To provide dental treatment in an inpatient and outpatient setting
* To support multidisciplinary care for those patients attending Brimingham Children's Hospital
* To support the education and training of postgraduate dentists and doctors in training to include clinical supervision.

Job responsibilities

Clinical duties

Provision of a Paediatric Dentistry consultant service for patients referred from hospital colleagues, general medical and dental practitioners, and the community dental services across the region and Birmingham Dental Hospital.

To develop and expand already established patient pathways across the region.

Provision of a treatment service for the more complex cases that are referred, working in close liaison with medical, surgical, and dental colleagues to provide an integrated service.

Provision of specialist care under inhalation sedation for children with behavioural problems and dental phobias.

To provide support to multidisciplinary teams where paediatric dentistry is already established as an integral component of care.

Provision of dental care under general anaesthesia for children with medical, mental, and physical special needs at Birmingham Childrens Hospital.

To continue to support those clinical services where there are existing relationships and arrangements.

Collaboration with paediatric maxillofacial surgery

Education and training

Provision of clinical supervision, education and training for Dental Nurses, Dental Therapists, post graduate dentists and doctors in training.

Participation in postgraduate training across West and East Midlands under the guidance of training programme director Laura Smart

Participation in undergraduate training in conjunction with The University of Birmingham School of Dentistry for those involved in the dental care of children.

To be involved in formal and informal teaching programmes established in the department supporting all members of the clinical team

Public health role

To work with Consultants in Dental Public Health in determining the needs and demands of the resident population with respect to dental care.

To support and develop strategies to reduce oral health inequalities

To become a member of the Managed Clinical Network in Paediatric Dentistry for the West Midlands

Management

Managerially and financially accountable to the Chief Medical Officer Birmingham Childrens Hospital NHS Trust for the delivery and quality of services.

Co-ordination and development of clinical services within the Trusts Service and Financial Framework, and in line with the Trusts clinical strategy and clinical governance framework.

National based NHS committee structures

Contribution to national and regional NHS based committees, for example - education, research, audit, examinations, and conferences - subject to the availability of appropriate time within the job planning process and by mutual agreement.

Research, innovation and improvements in service, including audit

To be personally involved in research. The consultant will work in national and international collaborative research programmes as opportunities arise.

To lead and/or play an active part in national, regional sub-regional and departmental audit.

To liaise with other providers of paediatric dental care in audit projects and to foster a commitment to evidence-based practice.

Special clinical interests

Encouragement will be given to develop special clinical interests which forward knowledge of the discipline or patient care within current financial constraints.

The post-holder will require considerable flexibility and a wide range of management skills to meet the many challenges of developing and co-ordinating paediatric dental services.

The applicant should have successfully completed an accredited specialist training programme in paediatric dentistry or equivalent and be registered as a Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry with the General Dental Council.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council (GDC
* On the GDC Specialist Register in Paediatric Dentistry
* Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination in Paediatric Dentistry or equivalent
* MSc or equivalent


Teaching

* Experience of post graduate teaching and undergraduate teaching
* Training in teaching


Audit

* Effective participation in clinical audit


Research

* Publications in refereed journals
* Research relevant to the Paediatric Dentistry specialty


Clinical

* Successful completion of an SAC-approved training programme in Paediatric Dentistry, or within 6 months of completion, or equivalent
* Experience of working within the Community Dental Service
* Experience of working within a hospital/managing medically
* Interest and experience in the broad range of Paediatric Dentistry
