About The Division
The Water Consultancy Division is Mott MacDonald’s centre of excellence for responding to water and wastewater challenges, offering opportunities to work on diverse, technically challenging projects. The work ensures safe water supplies for future generations and protects the environment. Our multidisciplinary teams cover the full project life cycle, from advisory services and feasibility studies, through outline and detailed design, to construction support and site supervision.
Overview of the Role
We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Civil Engineer with a strong technical background and expertise in hydraulic analysis and design to join our growing team. This professional role involves designing and analysing a wide range of water‑related projects in the UK and worldwide. You will undertake transmission pipelines, surge analysis, hydraulic design of water and wastewater treatment works, and stormwater storage tunnels, working holistically with mechanical, process, structural, and environmental teams.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
* Lead and deliver hydraulic analysis and design across potable and wastewater projects
* Produce and review engineering calculations, specifications, drawings and reports
* Mentor junior colleagues, providing technical guidance and advice
* Engage with clients and stakeholders to ensure efficient delivery, identifying and communicating programme, quality or cost risks
* Prepare time and budget estimates for proposals
* Collaborate across disciplines to deliver projects within the portfolio
* Engage with best practice and take responsibility for your own professional development
Candidate Specification
Essential
* Demonstrable technical experience of pressurised and open‑channel hydraulics applied to civil engineering, including surge analysis and large‑scale drainage systems across stages of the life cycle
* Experience with surge analysis tools such as WANDA or Bentley Hammer
* Experience developing hydraulic calculations and profiles for water and wastewater treatment works
* Proven leadership of technical projects, controlling budgets within responsibility
* Experience working in multi‑disciplinary water pipeline and networks projects with environmental, geotechnical, structural, electrical and mechanical engineers
* Strong collaboration and communication skills in oral presentations and written reports to colleagues, non‑technical staff, and clients
* Chartered membership of a relevant chartered institution such as ICE or CIWEM
Desirable
* Experience in transmission pipeline design – route, material selection, hydraulic design, steel pipe wall thickness, thrust restraint solutions
* Experience with CFD applied to the water industry
* Experience supervising physical scale modelling studies
* Good understanding of designer responsibilities under CDM
* Experience in clean water network modelling using EPANET, WaterGEMS or Infoworks
