Job Summary
University Hospital Birmingham is seeking a Locum Consultant Neurologist for a 12‑month fixed‑term contract to provide comprehensive care for the population of Birmingham. The role will sustain and develop existing inpatient and outpatient services and deliver general and specialist neurological care.
Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required
Applicants are invited to apply. The successful candidate will deliver predominantly outpatient care as well as some inpatient care for adults with a range of neurological conditions, and coordinate long‑term care in the community.
Essential Criteria
* Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice.
* Basic Medical Degree (e.g. MBBS).
* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (Proposed CCT date within 6 months of interview).
* European Community Rights or CESR.
* Evidence of Higher Specialist Training in Neurology (or within 6 months of confirmed entry).
* Full MRCP or equivalent.
* A wide experience of working in Neurology.

Job Description
Neurology service at UHB provides sub‑specialist services in Multiple Sclerosis, Movement Disorders (including Parkinson’s disease and Deep Brain Stimulation), Motor Neurone Disease, Epilepsy, Neuromuscular Diseases, Neuroimmunology, and Headache. The team works in partnership with Neurosurgery, Trauma, Stroke, Neurophysiology and Neuropsychiatry. The role includes a maximum of 10 programmed activities: at least 8 for direct clinical care and up to 2 for professional support activities. Additional educational, research or management responsibilities are expected to bring SPA time to 2.0; if not achieved, the allocation reverts to 1.5 SPA.
The post includes specialist and general neurology outpatient clinics, ward consultations, and contributions to the regional on‑call rota (1:18). The candidate may be required to provide support for acute neurology in other Trust hospitals or nearby district general hospitals.
Outpatient work (four clinics) will be determined by departmental needs and individual experience. The role also involves academic collaboration, teaching, and research (including multi‑centre trials) aligned with SPA time. An honorary appointment to the University of Birmingham may be available for applicants with active research interests.
Qualifications
Essential:
* GMC Registration.

* MRCP or equivalent.

* Certificate of Sponsorship – required for skilled worker sponsorship.
* UK Professional Registration.
Additional requirements for skilled worker applicants: a criminal record certificate for each country of residence for 12 months or more in the past 10 years; adult dependants over 18 years are also subject to this requirement.

Pay scheme: Hospital Medical and Dental. Band: Consultant. Salary: £109,725 to £145,478 yearly. Contract: Fixed Term. Duration: 12 months. Working pattern: Full‑time.
