The Role
We are seeking a highly motivated and customer-focused Field Service/Production Engineer to join our UK team. This role is the face of Axion BioSystems, ensuring our customers receive world-class technical support and service. You will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of our advanced instrumentation primarily across the UK and EMEA, with a significant concentration of time spent in the Oxford area.
This is an Oxford-based hybrid position, offering a fantastic opportunity to travel throughout EMEA and work at the forefront of life science technology while building strong relationships with leading research institutions.
Duties and Responsibilities
Field Service:
* This position is full-time with 3 days a week minimum at our Oxford site
* Repair & Maintenance: Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair hardware and software issues efficiently to minimize customer downtime. Perform preventative maintenance and calibration.
* Documentation: Accurately document all service activities, including field service reports, parts usage, and customer interactions in our CRM system.
* Collaboration: Document and present customer feedback and relevant repair and service details to internal development teams to contribute to product improvement. Work with Sales, R&D, Supply Chain, and Quality teams to drive continuous improvement.
* Inventory Management: Manage your own trunk stock of spare parts and tools to ensure optimum preparation for service calls.
* Travel: Extensive travel (approximately 25-50%) within the UK & EMEA is required. A valid passport is essential.
Production
* Process Optimization: Help develop and optimise manufacturing processes to improve efficiency, yield, and product quality.
* Production Support: Troubleshoot technical issues on the production line, ensuring minimal downtime, maintaining on-time delivery to the customer. Work closely with the Operations Team to ensure product performance is optimized
* Quality Assurance: Collaborate with Manufacturing team to implement best practices to meet current regulatory standards (ISO 9000) and other Statutory and Regulatory compliance i.e. RoHS / REACH / CE and Equipment compliance.
* New Product Introduction (NPI): Support the transition of R&D prototypes into scalable production.
* Equipment & Tooling: Specify, validate, and maintain production equipment and fixtures. Ensure all relevant Test systems and metrology is calibrated to traceable standards.
Technical Qualifications
Must Haves
* An associate degree or a BSc in Engineering (or other equivalent field or relevant work experience).
* At least 2 years of experience with electrical/mechanical system repair, soldering maintenance, and operation. 5+ years in a manufacturing/production engineering role (medical systems, devices or biotech preferred).
* Experience with component-level hardware debugging and failure analysis for printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs)
* General knowledge of Microsoft products such as Excel, Word, Access, Outlook etc. are a must.
* Ability to read and understand technical documents, electrical schematics and datasheets (e.g. EAGLE, PADsviewer), and follow SOPs.
* Excellent organizational and time management skills.
* Professional communication and interpersonal skills.
* Efficiently works under pressure and within deadline.
* Familiarity with basic laboratory practices and environments.
* Experience running validation protocols (IQ/OQ/PQ) is a strong plus.
* A positive, problem-solving mindset and a passion for delivering outstanding customer experiences.
* Ability to travel, with overnight stays and approximately 1-week notice.
Nice to Haves
* Experience with ERP systems and entering relevant parts and interpreting orders.
* Experience using and troubleshooting laboratory-based equipment such as plate readers, microscopes, and similar equipment
* Experience interpreting error logs with training
* Experience with cell-based assays, microscopy, or other bioanalytical instrumentation is a plus
