Overview
We are recruiting for a 10PA substantive resident on call General Paediatric Consultant to be based at Worthing Hospital with an earliest start date of March 2026. The candidate will deliver high quality paediatric care to neonates, children and young people within outpatient and inpatient settings in the Worthing area. The post aims to drive forward standards within a motivated multidisciplinary team across the Trust and tertiary services when needed. Job responsibilities
* Role based on 10 PAs (9 DCC PAs and 1 SPA).
* Undertake twice weekly outpatient general paediatric clinics (new and follow-up patients).
* Participate in the Consultant of the Week rota (1:10 weeks, Monday–Friday, 9–5).
* Manage acute general paediatric and level 1 neonatal wards during attending weeks with an MDT (nurses, doctors, physios, dieticians).
* Carry out bedside teaching to junior doctors and medical students; develop management and leadership skills.
* Support patient flow through the children\'s day unit and ensure timely senior decision making; supervise junior colleagues.
* Non-resident consultant on-call duties: 1:16 weekdays (flexible) and 1:10 weekends; resident on-call involves 26 tier 2 night shifts per year (Mon/Tue) with a tier 1 resident and non-resident consultant on call support.
* Lead ward rounds on general and neonatal wards; respond to neonatal and paediatric emergencies with the resus team.
* Availability to attend from home for clinical and operational advice; support and guidance to resident paediatric junior doctors and nurses.
* Deliver standard weekly workload when not attending: 2 general outpatient clinic sessions, 2 CYPDU sessions, 1 SPA, 1 admin session.
Qualifications and requirements
Essential
* Basic Medical Degree
* MRCPCH or appropriate specialist qualification
* Full and specialist GMC registration (or eligible to register within six months of interview); UK-trained candidates with CCT or within six months of CCT; non-UK trained with evidence of equivalence to UK CCT (GMC confirmation by interview date)
* Relevant post-registration experience
* Appropriate acute general paediatric skills
* Child Safeguarding Level 3
* Understanding of clinical risk management
* APLS or equivalent; NLS or equivalent
* Appropriate neonatal clinical skills
* Experience working in multi-professional teams
* Evidence of teaching commitment; ability to contribute to training of junior staff
* Evidence of participation in audit and clinical governance
* UK registration requirement fulfilled
Desirable
* Higher degree (e.g., MSc)
* Experience in related specialties; broad clinical knowledge
* Recognised teaching qualification
* Research experience; publications; prizes and honours
