Job Description Summary
We are looking for a lead mechanical engineer to work in the equipment design team within our systems engineering organisation, based in our Rugby or Glasgow engineering centres. This role involves developing next‑generation naval products, designing cutting‑edge technology for future naval platforms, and participating across all stages of the product development process from concept to manufacturing. You will collaborate with project managers, technical leads, and power systems and power electronics teams to deliver on customer requirements. Due to security restrictions, only UK nationals who hold or are eligible for SC security clearance may apply.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop innovative mechanical designs for power electronics, electrical distribution, and integrated test equipment, ensuring performance, reliability, cost, and manufacturability.
* Create 3D CAD models and 2D drawings in PTC Creo and manage parts and BoMs in Siemens Teamcenter PLM.
* Perform engineering analyses using hand calculations and software tools.
* Develop test plans and support physical testing of prototypes to validate designs.
* Collaborate with product and project managers to deliver customer requirements on time and to budget.
* Use engineering tools and processes to optimise throughput and quality, implement DFMA techniques, and ensure design excellence.
* Act as the technical point of contact for all mechanical engineering topics related to project work.
Essential Requirements
* A degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, or relevant experience in a mechanical design engineering environment.
* Significant engineering experience with knowledge of manufacturing processes, sheet metal design, DFMA, and material selection.
* Strong track record in product development, ideally in industrial or electrical equipment sectors.
* Ability to read electrical schematics and develop suitable mechanical designs.
* Proficiency in PTC Creo or similar 3D CAD software, including 3D part and assembly models and 2D drawings.
* Good engineering, communication, and organisational skills.
* UK national status with eligibility for SC or higher UK security clearance.
Desirable Characteristics
* Experience designing MV and LV switchgear and packaging of power electronics equipment.
* Experience with Siemens Teamcenter PLM software for BoM creation and management.
* Expertise in stress, thermal, and fluid‑flow analyses using hand calculations and FEA tools such as ANSYS and Fluent.
Benefits
You can expect to work on cutting‑edge technology on novel drive‑system topologies and challenging, global projects in a collaborative, innovation‑focused environment. Executive compensation includes flexible benefits – you can build a package that meets your personal needs. Core benefits include employer pension contribution, income protection, private health insurance and life assurance, 26 days vacation plus bank holidays, and opportunities for professional growth and career advancement within a global company.
