About The Role Job Purpose The Maintenance Shift Leader is responsible for ensuring the effective and efficient maintenance of production equipment. The role involves leading a multi-skilled engineering team, overseeing preventive and corrective maintenance programs, and ensuring the team meets performance targets while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and operational efficiency. The Maintenance Shift Leader will prioritise maintenance activities based on critical safety, quality and production priorities which will be demonstrated through performance related KPI’s and driving continuous improvement. The Maintenance Shift Lead will ensure project works are supported to enable capital and improvement projects are delivered in line with agreed scope, cost and timeline. Key Result Area / Principal Duties & Responsibilities Maintenance Operations: Oversee and manage preventive and corrective maintenance activities to ensure equipment uptime and reliability, minimizing production disruption. Team Leadership: Lead and develop a multi-skilled engineering team, ensuring high performance, skill development, and a strong safety culture. Ensure regular 1 to 1 meetings take place, including but not limited to Crew Reviews, that enable conversations about performance and personal development. Competency Development: Assess engineer competencies, identify training needs, and organize internal/external training programs to ensure team skills meet operational demands. Workload Prioritization: Prioritize maintenance tasks based on safety, quality, and production needs, ensuring alignment with operational goals. KPI Management: Develop and report on maintenance KPIs, ensuring performance targets are met and taking corrective action when necessary. Compliance & Quality: Ensure all maintenance activities meet health, safety, and quality standards, and prepare for audits and inspections. Budget Management: Manage the maintenance budget in line with the agreed annual value. Request the procurement of necessary spare parts and tools to ensure a value for money maintenance service is delivered to the business Project Management: Lead maintenance projects, including equipment upgrades and refurbishments, ensuring timely and cost-effective delivery. Ensure you and team members support capital and improvement projects as required by the business and in conjunction with the Project Manager. Problem Solving: Provide expertise for troubleshooting complex maintenance issues to minimize downtime. Continuous Improvement: Drive ongoing improvements in maintenance processes, performance, workshop and departmental standards, and efficiency using appropriate methodologies. Stand in for Head of Engineering as required. Relevant certifications in electrical, mechanical, or automation disciplines. Experience Proven experience in a maintenance management role within the food and beverage or a similar high-paced manufacturing environment. Demonstrated experience leading multi-skilled engineering teams and managing complex maintenance tasks across mechanical, electrical, and automated systems. Experience with managing budgets, overseeing procurement, and resource planning for maintenance operations. Hands-on experience in troubleshooting and resolving mechanical, electrical, and automation failures. Knowledge Strong understanding of food safety regulations (e.g., HACCP) and industry best practices. In-depth knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and automation systems. Familiarity with Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) for tracking maintenance activities and work orders. Knowledge of continuous improvement methodologies is highly desirable. Understanding of performance metrics and how they relate to maintenance team performance. Able to cascade these to a team and ensure that the team operates in a way that enhances these outcomes. Skills Strong leadership and team management skills, including the ability to motivate and develop a diverse engineering team. Able to manage performance that does not meet the expected standards of delivery or behaviour. Problem-solving and analytical skills, with a focus on root cause analysis and resolving complex maintenance issues. Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) to liaise effectively with senior management, production teams, and external stakeholders. Ability to prioritize tasks based on safety, quality, and production criticality. Strong organizational skills to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, CMMS software and other maintenance management tools is desirable. Personal Attributes Proactive with a hands-on approach to maintenance management.
