Clinical Educator for Learning Disabilities and Autism


Band 7

Fixed Term Contract: 14 months

We are looking for a dynamic and driven Learning Disabilities Educator who is enthusiastic about education and learning within healthcare to join our team.

This role will join as a member of the BWC Learning Disability Liaison Team and will be vital in leading the development of the Learning Disability, Autism and Mental Health agenda through learning from incidents, educational resources and tools.

The post holder will develop and deliver education and learning events where training needs for the workforce have been identified.

Main duties of the job

* Lead, coordinate and deliver education and training in Learning Disabilities and Autism, including the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism.
* Deliver Learning Disabilities and Autism awareness and Mental Capacity Act (MCA) training to support staff competence and compliance.
* Maintain a visible clinical presence on wards, providing real-time advice, coaching, and support to staff.
* Support the development and implementation of reasonable adjustments, including CHOICE Assessments and effective use of Hospital Passports.
* Analyse and interpret data from incidents, audits, and reviews to inform education and improve patient safety.
* Lead and contribute to quality improvement initiatives relating to Learning Disabilities and Autism.
* Coordinate and support responses to SEND requirements, including Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) processes and quality assurance.
* Provide specialist advice and guidance to multidisciplinary teams across the Trust.
* Support, supervise, and develop Band 6 staff and administrative colleagues within the Clinical Education Team.
* Work collaboratively with ward managers, professional leads, and external partners to identify and meet workforce development needs.
* Ensure compliance with Trust policies, national standards, and regulatory requirements.
* Maintain own professional development and contribute to a positive learning culture across the organisation.


Person specification


Qualifications

* Current NMC register Learning Disability Nurse
* Post Graduate Certificate in Education/GIC or at an equivalent level
* Appropriate UK professional registration


Knowledge & Nature of Experience

* Ability to motivate others
* Commitment to practising, monitoring and teaching to a high standard of clinical care
* A knowledge of and practical use of information technology
* An understanding of current issues in education and practice including trust initiatives, knowledge of NMC/HCPC developments and their implications on practice
* Evidence of experience in patient safety and investigations including report writing
* Awareness of the national Trust and agendas
* Exposure to technology dependent patients that are relevant to post

Professional/Managerial/Specialist Knowledge

* Been in a Band 6 role for the last 12 months; role and responsibilities
* Awareness of current research, development and evidence based practice
* Understanding of Clinical Governance
* Child Protection Level 3
* Evidence of ability to confront challenging issues, knowledge of change management and ability to implement
* Ability to produce clear, accurate, written, verbal and electronic reports
* Able to act as a resource and demonstrate excellent negotiation skills
* Ability to put current research into practice and bring about change


Personal Skills/Abilities and Attributes

* Excellent telephone manner
* Excellent Interpersonal and communication skills
* Ability to prioritise and plan workload and capacity in line with the service and organisational needs
* Ability to work under pressure in a very busy environment
* Experience in data inputting into Excel, Access databases etc.
