Consultant Clinical Psychologist for Stroke

Significant investment in stroke rehabilitation services has enabled extension of the care pathway. This has led to an exciting opportunity for an experienced Clinical Psychologist to lead the psychology input across the stroke care pathway including inpatient and community services at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The role involves oversight of the psychology service within both the inpatient ward and the Integrated Community Stroke Service (ICSS). The post will involve working as part of the multidisciplinary stroke teams providing rehabilitation up to six months post stroke. You will provide consultation and professional guidance to the multidisciplinary teams. As a valued member of the MDT, you will provide consultation, training and supervision to staff on patients' psychological/neuropsychological wellbeing. You will provide line management and supervision of colleagues in Clinical Psychology across the care pathway. You will work with the senior leadership team in enhancing psychological understanding to support the wider system including supporting a stepped care model.


Main duties of the job

You will lead the provision of Clinical Psychology Stroke Services and provide leadership, consultation and professional guidance. You will advise commissioning bodies as required.

The clinical duties of the role will depend on service need, clinical interest and will based across both the Integrated Community Stroke Service and inpatient stroke ward. You will be responsible for the delivery of a high quality, specialist Clinical Psychology service. You will be required to design and implement care pathways and protocols to assess and manage mood and cognition difficulties in accordance with national guidance. You will support the multidisciplinary team and offer consultation, training and supervision regarding the neuropsychological assessment and management of stroke. You will be encouraged to engage with appropriate CPD and networking.

You will have a key role in auditing the effectiveness of the stroke psychology service.

You must be a HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist and have substantive experience of working with people with neurological conditions. You should be able to evidence postdoctoral training in Clinical Neuropsychology. You should have completed or enrolled on the full Qualification in Clinical Neuropsychology. You must have a proven record in leading services and managing teams. You must have excellent communication skills and the ability to build strong working relationships with a range of professionals, patients, and families.

Job responsibilities

* To operate as a senior member of both the SFHT Stroke Leadership Team and the Nottinghamshire Healthcare Neuropsychology Team to support the delivery of stroke psychology services. To advise commissioning bodies and the Nottinghamshire Integrated for Stroke Delivery Network as appropriate.
* To contribute to national forums which develop national guidance regarding the psychological management of stroke as appropriate.
* To plan, manage, lead and ensure the delivery of specialist psychological and neuropsychological services in line with national guidance for adults affected by stroke within the SFHT care pathway across specialist inpatient and community services.
* To be responsible for designing, developing and delivering a high quality, specialist clinical psychology service to the newly formed SFHT Integrated Community Stroke Service for adults up to 6 months post stroke. Including the design and development of neuropsychological care pathways for the assessment and treatment of stroke related mood and cognition difficulties to comply with national guidance. The service will adhere to current evidence and national guidance including the NHS Service Model for an Integrated Community Stroke Service (2022).
* To design, oversee and implement a stepped care model of psychological care across the SFHT stroke pathway including inpatient and community settings to widen patient access to psychological care ensuring service delivery at all levels of care including by non-psychology staff. To achieve this through training, consultation and supervision on psychological care to the multidisciplinary teams.
* To be responsible for the recruitment of Clinical Psychology staff for SFHT stroke services.
* To provide line management of Clinical Psychologists and Assistant Psychologists and provide specialist neuropsychological clinical supervision to Clinical Psychologists, Assistant Psychologists and Trainee Clinical Psychologists in both the Integrated Community Stroke Service and the inpatient Stroke Ward.
* To be responsible for the organisation and professional leadership of Clinical and other Practitioner Psychologists, trainees, assistants, and placement students, as required.
* To provide professional expert leadership and supervision to a range of MDT colleagues across all service areas regarding the neuropsychological impact of stroke and its management.
* To be a teaching resource for local Clinical Psychology Training courses. To use research skills for service evaluation, audit, policy and service development. To lead the assessment of the effectiveness of the Integrated Community Stroke Service including Psychology, using appropriate outcome measures and statistical analysis. To rigorously evaluate outcomes using appropriate measures and statistical analysis and suggest innovations to further enhance outcomes for patient care, to present the results to senior management and commissioning bodies.

Person Specification


Qualifications & professional membership

* BPS accredited Doctoral Level training qualification in Clinical Psychology
* Eligible for Chartered status of the British Psychological Society
* Health & Care Professions Council Registered as a Practitioner Psychologist: Clinical Psychologist
* Evidence of postdoctoral training in Clinical Neuropsychology.
* Enrolment on or completion of the Full Qualification in Clinical Neuropsychology as recognised by the BPS Division of Neuropsychology which confers eligibility for registration on The Specialist Register of Clinical Neuropsychologists
* Completion of a Clinical Psychology supervision qualification as recognised by the D.Clin Psy training courses
* BPS Chartered Psychologist Status;
* Member of The Specialist Register of Clinical Neuropsychologists/Practitioner Full Member of the Division of Neuropsychology
* Holder of the Qualification in Clinical Neuropsychology (QiCN)
* Experience of publishing in peer reviewed journals


Experience

* Substantive post qualification experience in clinical neuropsychology and neurorehabilitation as applied to the stroke population
* Substantive experience of working in a multidisciplinary team in neurorehabilitation or stroke services

Contractual requirements

* A full current UK driving license and vehicle for business use is required for this post; however reasonable adjustments will be made for disabled individuals in line with the Equality Act 2010. Ability to travel to provide a service as part of a community team in patients' homes as well as between sites
* Ability to carry out work from home in a confidential and professional manner when required including adequate internet connection


Physical Requirements

* Sustained periods of sitting and is required to travel to patient homes and between NHS sites to deliver a psychological service as part of a community team. The post holder is required to move psychometric tests and portable IT equipment as required
