Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Estates & Facilities team to lead our Estates maintenance service as our Associate Director (Head of Estates) at Whipps Cross Hospital. Whipps Cross Hospital is part of the Barts Health Group, major providers of acute healthcare in North East London. Working in healthcare requires an adaptable approach and hence, in addition to excellent Estates management knowledge, you will be able to communicate effectively, be self-motivated along with the competence to prioritise effectively, coupled with the desire and ability to initiate and embrace new ideas. You will have a passion to deliver high quality estates services that place the patient, public and hospital staff at the centre of the team’s activities.

There are well advanced plans to build a new Whipps Cross Hospital as part of the NHS New Hospitals Programme (NHP) that is expected to deliver a brand new state-of-the-art net-zero carbon hospital in the next decade. As the Head of Estates, you will be involved in the delivery of this scheme and ensuring that the hospital has an Estates team equipped to manage the transition to the new hospital whilst also providing good quality safe services to the substantial existing healthcare estate.

Over the past five years, over £40m has been invested in capital schemes across Whipps Cross Hospital to address essential backlog maintenance issues and to improve the quality of the environment provided.


Main duties of the job

Accountable to the Hospital Director of Estates & Facilities, the postholder will provide technical operational leadership and strategic direction for all engineering, infrastructure (including fire) and building activity undertaken on the acute hospital site. Supporting the Director of Estates and Facilities in delivering all strategic objectives, including the coordination of capital, project and backlog programmes, ensuring all technical standards, including engineering excellence and patient safety, are prioritized through structured accountability and compliance with statutory and non-statutory requirements in line with HTM/HBN standards, supported by a robust Authorised Engineer, Authorised Person, and Certified Person structure.

Qualifications and Training

* Professionally qualified at 1st Degree level plus Masters level or equivalent experience in an engineering or appropriate technical subject.
* Corporate/full membership of one of the following institutions: I Mech E, IEE, CIBSE, IHEEM
* Qualified to chartered status plus significant proven relevant specialist experience at a chartered senior engineer level.
* Extensive current knowledge and experience of implementing Health & Safety legislation related to engineering operations and projects in a large organization.
* Formal Health and Safety qualification, e.g., Nebosh


Experience/Knowledge

* Substantial experience of operating in a senior management role and delivering an engineering service in a large, complex environment.
* Previous experience of developing and implementing estates operational strategies.
* Extensive demonstrable success in delivering change and performance through management teams, engaging them in strategic and delivery plans.
* Comprehensive technical knowledge relating to mechanical and electrical building services in commercial, industrial, or health buildings.
* Experience managing large, complex engineering systems including revenue and capital budgets.
* Knowledge of statutory land and legal requirements impacting building ownership and occupation.
* Understanding of budget/financial management.
* Staff management experience, including managing directly employed staff and external contractors.
* Ability to analyze complex problems and develop practical solutions.
* Ability to prioritize work amidst competing demands.
* Understanding of design, contractual processes, and procurement methods.
* Experience in a senior position within the NHS or private sector.
* Knowledge of HTM’s, ERIC, and PAM systems.
