Unit Mission Statement:

The Batten School & the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) are among the largest marine research and education centers in the United States. Located along the glistening beaches of Gloucester, Virginia, VIMS provides research, education, and advisory services to government, citizens, students, and industry in coastal oceans and estuary science. VIMS is transforming data into policies, students into leaders, and theories into tangible change for solutions to global problems and to restore marine life.

The Communications & Marketing Team's mission is to increase awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the Batten School & VIMS and their mission among external audiences.

Position Summary:

This position is a key member of the Communications and Marketing Team. Responsibilities include overseeing the Batten School & VIMS web presence and playing a key role in executing content strategy and brand management using the web as a primary communications asset. This position serves as a strategic internal consultant for the website and provides support and oversight to unit-level web editors throughout the Batten School & VIMS. Additionally, the Website & Content Strategist will produce a variety of communications content focused on research, student success, community impact, advisory services and more.

Conditions of Employment:

This position may be subject to additional hours beyond the typical work week to include occasional evening and weekend work.

FLSA: Exempt

Position Restricted: Yes, the appointment is limited due to funding availability

Position Term: 12 months

Required Qualifications:

* An undergraduate degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
* Considerable progressive responsibility in:
o website content management
o working in communications, marketing or public relations
o writing communications pieces for a wide range audience
o effectively interacting with peers, customers and technical resources
o Project management experience, organizational skills and aptitude for managing time, meeting deadlines, upwardly managing approvals and handling multiple projects simultaneously
o Exceptional communication, customer service, presentation and problem-solving skills
o Commitment to excellence in a collaborative, team-oriented environment
o Working knowledge of search engine optimization (SEO) best practices
o Understanding of ADA accessibility requirements for websites

Preferred Qualifications:

* Advanced knowledge of web editing tools, office productivity tools, web communication protocols and web content management systems; some knowledge of HTML, CSS, web programming, and new and emerging web multimedia tools
* Knowledge and understanding of search engine marketing (SEM) implementation and best practices
* Experience working in a higher education environment
* Experience with Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager

Is the position remote work eligible? Hybrid (works remotely at least 1 day per week but not full-time)

Advertised Pay Range: $65,000-$75,000 commensurate with experience
