Offer description

Overview

The post holder will join an existing team of Intensivists in Scarborough and contribute to daytime and on‑call ICU duties. The ICU at Scarborough Hospital currently admits around 400 patients per year and is staffed with 6 level‑3 beds, with future growth likely.

A brand new, purpose‑built, state‑of‑the‑art Intensive Care Unit opened in May 2025. The new unit has 10 individual patient rooms, a roof terrace, and excellent staff facilities.

Daytime and Overnight Coverage

Daytime ICU cover is provided by a FICM‑accredited Consultant Intensivist from 8am to 6pm every day of the week. Overnight cover may be provided by an Intensivist or an Anaesthetist (Specialist or Consultant) with an interest in ICM. The rota is currently 1:8 but is planned to expand over time. Daytime ICU cover may also be provided by a York‑based ICU consultant.

The ICU is also staffed by a robust SAS / middle‑grade / trainee rota during the day and out of hours.

Nursing Support

The nursing teams are supported by an experienced senior nurse leadership and educator team. Recruitment and staffing numbers are strong.

Clinical Information System

The intensive care unit uses the high‑performance Metavision Clinical Information System for records, which can be accessed and viewed remotely.

Working Patterns and Job Planning

Individual job plans are discussed and finalised with the Lead Clinician and Clinical Director at appointment and reviewed annually. Plans align with the Trust’s Job Planning Principles and cover clinical work, teaching, research, education, managerial responsibilities, and external commitments.

Core SPA: 1.25 PA/week (professional development, appraisal, revalidation, administration, teaching, ICU governance, and grand‑round meetings). Additional SPA may be allocated for further roles.

On‑Call Commitment

On‑call duty: 2.8 PA/week. The current rota is 1:8, consisting of 26 weeknights and 20 days plus night calls on Friday, Saturday or Sunday per year, and is a Category A rota. Unpredictable on‑call is subject to NHS standard hours monitoring. A post holder must live within 30 minutes of the hospital.

DBS Checks

All new employees will be charged for the cost of a DBS check if required for the role. Standard checks cost £27.38; enhanced checks cost £55.38. Charges are deducted from salary either in one payment or over six months, once employment starts. Volunteers and bank staff are exempt. Transgender applicants may opt for the sensitive applications route, preventing disclosure of gender or name information on their DBS certificate.

Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Applicants must acknowledge awareness that the selection process prohibits the use of AI to generate an application that does not accurately reflect their skills and values.

Agile and Flexible Working

All posts are eligible for flexible working from day one. Staff may request flexible working at any time and should discuss requirements with the recruiting manager.
