Job Description Overview
Shape the future of our cities and environments as a Principal Design Manager– Rivers & Coastal at AtkinsRéalis’s Design & Advanced Technology practice. Based in Epsom, Peterborough or Cambridge, you will deliver transformational programmes for critical UK infrastructure, working on landmark engineering projects domestically and internationally.
Responsibilities
* Coordinate or manage a team of engineers and scientists for the delivery of technical design work on complex multi‑disciplinary projects, following national and project‑specific design codes and standards.
* Produce and review technical deliverables such as design reports, drawings, calculations and scopes of work.
* Provide technical input into project design deliverables for coastal infrastructure, river engineering and flood defence, working with the project management team to manage time and budgets to key milestones.
* Collaborate with clients, operational teams and other AtkinsRéalis teams within the immediate and broader group.
* Mentor less experienced colleagues and help grow River & Coastal Engineering capabilities within the local team.
* Work independently with minimal technical guidance, exercising personal judgement to solve difficult problems and providing guidance to junior team members.
* Provide technical support for bid proposals.
* Work closely with a multi‑disciplinary team in the UK and overseas to deliver integrated design solutions.
* Adhere to quality assurance standards in design, including checking and reviewing own work and that of others.
Qualifications & Experience
A degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent, and Chartered or Incorporated Civil Engineer status.
* Proven experience in leading multidisciplinary design delivery, including Design & Build.
* Broad perspective to identify innovative solutions to design problems.
* Knowledge and practical experience of coastal infrastructure, flood walls and embankments, weirs, hydraulic structures, culverts, scour protection, access and construction logistics.
* Proficiency in delivering both traditional engineering and environmentally focused solutions using nature‑based strategies.
* Practical knowledge of current design codes, standards, CDM Regulations and industry best practices.
* Experience in the Water market is essential; experience in wider markets such as Aviation, Defence, Highways or Energy is desirable.
* Strong communication skills, able to convey technical concepts clearly and effectively within diverse multi‑disciplinary teams.
* Sound commercial, contractual and programme experience.
* Independent working style with minimal technical guidance and a proactive, highly motivated mindset.

Security Clearance
This role may require UK Security Vetting (UKSV) clearance. Proof of UK residency for 5 years or longer may need to be provided. The vetting process will discuss clearance level during interview.
