To support the Architecture and Rural Economy (ARE) Directorate’s migration to theThe Scottish Government cloud platform we have two positions for Senior Cloud Architects who will play a key role in designing secure, scalable digital solutions that meet user needs and deliver public value.
Specialising in Amazon Web Services (AWS), our Senior Cloud Architects are part of a multi-disciplined team responsible for the design, delivery, and ongoing improvement of ARE Digital Services.
ARE works to support Scotland's sustainable economic growth, especially in the rural economy, making the most of Scotland’s environment, natural assets and advantages - its people, landscapes, biodiversity, agriculture, food & drink and animal welfare.
The Cloud Architects are part of the ARE Architecture Office. They will work closely with our Cloud Platform and Service Delivery Teams and collaborate closely with policy and operational teams within ARE.
Responsibilities
* Evidencing technical leadership qualities, with a passion for delivering leading edge designs, and inspiring a culture of technical excellence and innovative solutions.
* Providing technical leadership and expertise on large projects or critical workstreams in complex programmes.
* Anticipating and advising on future technology that present opportunities for the product or programme.
* Designing complex technology solutions recognising time, cost and quality targets and constraints.
* Working within an Architecture function, ensuring standards and governance is followed for enterprise and solution designs.
* Defining, owning and contributing to the technical roadmap and strategy.
* Demonstrating a detailed knowledge of technical requirements to implement, design and manage associated technologies with a demonstrable experience of designing solution on Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Success profile
Success profiles are specific to each job and they include the mix of skills, experience and behaviours candidates will be assessed on.
Experience
* Designing complex technology solutions, recognising time, cost and quality targets and constraints.
* Demonstrating leadership in solution and service governance, including the assessment of moderate risks and the definition of significant architectural decision.
* Collaborating with security, operational and service teams on service design, governance, and operation.
This role is aligned to Technical Architect (DDaT Role Level – Senior Technical Architect) within the Architecture Job Family.
These skills will be tested during the Technical Assessment if you are successful at sift stage. They will be not be assessed at application stage.

Candidates who are successful at sift stage will be invited to attend an Interview and Technical Assessment. The interview will further assess the Experience and Behaviours listed in the job advert and the Technical Assessment will evaluate the Technical Skills relevant to the role.
Candidates who pass the sift and are invited to the Interview and Technical Assessment stage will receive a Technical Assessment Candidate Pack, which will outline the skills to be assessed and the assessment methods to be used.
Following the application sift, there may be a telephone interview as part of the assessment process before the main interview.
Interviews will be in person and DDaT Technical assessments are scheduled for w/c 23 February 2026, however these may be subject to change.
