Senior Research Software Engineering Lead
College of Social Sciences, School of Social & Political Sciences.
Vacancy Reference: 187193. Salary: Grade 8, £50,253 - £58,225 per annum. Full time (35 hours per week). Available until 31st October 2028 in the first instance.
Responsibilities
* Design, develop, and maintain robust data analytics pipelines and scalable applications that support interdisciplinary research.
* Architect intuitive user interfaces that make complex datasets accessible, interactive, and actionable.
* Collaborate directly with researchers, data scientists, and external partners to co-create impactful solutions that support data-intensive social research across the full software lifecycle—from requirements gathering through implementation, testing, and deployment.
* Provide technical leadership, mentoring and coordination to a small team of technicians.
* Serve as a key liaison with infrastructure providers, helping researchers optimize the use of high-performance computing resources, including cloud platforms and university infrastructure services.
* Contribute to the design of research projects and funding proposals, embedding software engineering expertise into UBDC’s strategy.
Qualifications
* Solid software engineering skills with a strong focus on developing reproducible, user-focused solutions.
* Demonstrated project management experience and initial leadership experience.
* Ability to thrive in a fast-paced research setting, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams.
* Proven capacity to contribute meaningful societal change through thoughtful, user-focused software engineering.
