Job Opportunity: Transfer Practitioner

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced critical care staff member to join Retrieve (Peninsula Base) as a Transfer Practitioner.

Retrieve is the South West’s dedicated Adult Critical Care Transfer Service, commissioned by NHS England South West Specialised Commissioning, hosted by University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, and supported by the South West Critical Care Network (SWCCN). We seek a registered critical care practitioner capable of delivering high-quality transfer care to critically unwell patients across the South West.

Retrieve provides a 24-hour single point of contact for adult critical care transfer referrals via a dedicated 0300 number. Calls are managed by a Duty Consultant who triages, coordinates, and provides remote decision-support. The service operates a dedicated 24-hour transfer team from bases in Launceston, Cornwall (Peninsula sub-region), and Bristol (Severn sub-region).

This post is offered at 0.81 FTE (33.25 hours per week).

As a Band 6 Transfer Practitioner, following additional training, you will be responsible for the specialised care required during the transfer of critically ill adults. You will also be expected to develop your clinical and management skills, working remotely in partnership with local teams in referring centres.

The role involves working independently at times, managing Level 2 (high dependency) and Level 1 (ward level) patient transfers, supported remotely by the Retrieve Duty Consultant and in collaboration with hospital doctors. You will support and mentor new team members and participate in education programmes.

In partnership with SWCCN, you will foster relationships between the Service and referring centres. Under the guidance of Lead Nurses and Senior Transfer Practitioners, you will engage in service projects, audits, research, education, and outreach activities.

The role requires shift work, including nights, evenings, and weekends, with occasional overrun. Due to the nature of transfers, you must adhere to infection prevention and control protocols when working with highly infectious patients.

University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) is a large, diverse Trust serving over 500,000 people across South West England. Recognized as ‘Good’ by the CQC, UHBW is committed to excellence, innovation, and research, offering a vibrant environment with access to city, seaside, and countryside living.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults. As an equal opportunities employer, we strive for a diverse workforce that reflects the local community.
