About the Role
We’re looking for an experienced Operational Trainer / Assessor to deliver and assess safety-critical training across our national depot network.
You’ll be instrumental in building operational capability—designing engaging training programmes, assessing competence, and ensuring our people meet the highest standards of safety, compliance and performance.
This is a hands-on, high-impact role where you’ll collaborate closely with operational teams while acting as a subject matter expert and role model.
Key Responsibilities
Training Delivery & Development
7. Deliver safety-critical and technical training, including:
8. Track Safety
9. Driving and shunting
10. Technical and equipment training
11. Design and develop engaging learning materials and programmes
12. Adapt training to meet operational and contract-specific requirements
13. Take ownership of the quality and consistency of assigned training courses
Assessment & Competency
14. Plan and conduct workplace-based assessments for vocational qualifications.
15. Provide clear, timely and evidence-based feedback to learners and managers.
16. Support individuals who are “not yet competent” with structured development plans.
17. Maintain accurate records in line with company, customer and regulatory requirements.
18. Support the management of competency frameworks and matrices.
Planning & Stakeholder Engagement
19. Plan and coordinate training delivery, including logistics, resources and scheduling
20. Work closely with stakeholders to ensure effective outcomes
21. Support mobilisation activities through delivery of training packages
Continuous Improvement & Leadership
22. Monitor and improve training effectiveness
23. Mentor and support other trainers and assessors
24. Maintain your own professional and technical competence
25. Champion a strong safety culture at all times
About You
Essential Experience & Knowledge
26. 3–5+ years’ experience within the rail industry
27. Strong understanding of train depot operations and rolling stock
28. Experience delivering training and carrying out workplace assessments
29. Confident, engaging facilitator able to work with diverse groups
30. Strong communication, organisation and reporting skills
Qualifications
31. Level 3 Engineering qualification (C&G / BTEC or equivalent)
32. Assessor qualification (e.g. TAQA, A1, CAVA)
33. Teaching/Training qualification (e.g. PTLLS, CTLLS, PGCE, CertEd)
34. Full UK driving licence
35. Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) qualification
36. Mentoring/coaching qualification
