Consultant Anaesthetist

TheDepartment of Anaesthesia is part of the Division of Perioperative and CriticalCare together with Theatres, Pre-operative assessment, Pain, Psychology,Sterile Services and ITU. The Trust appreciates the unique role thatanaesthesia plays in the delivery of a large number of services. The Clinical Director is a permanent memberof the management team for the Theatre Division. Consultants have roles as Clinical Leads inthe constituent areas.
Allmajor surgical specialties are provided by the Trust with the exception ofcardiac, neurosurgery and plastic surgery. Major cases are performed inVascular, Upper and Lower Gastrointestinal Surgery, Head and Neck (ENT andmaxillofacial), Orthopaedics and Gynaecology.
Therole includes cover of both elective and emergency work with an on-call rotathat covers both acute sites at a frequency of 1:22
Main duties of the job
To workunder the direction of the Clinical Directors to coordinate and deliver thestrategic and operational aspects of the Anaesthesia and Critical Care servicesacross the region. These will reflectNational and Local priorities including the strategic direction of SouthTyneside and Sunderland Hospitals Trust and the Division of Perioperative andCritical Care.
The postholder is expected to be on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months ofobtaining their CCST in Anaesthesia at the time of accepting the post.
Consultantperformance is monitored within the Directorate and strong emphasis is given topersonal career development, in line with clinical governance. All consultantsmust comply with Trust policy for revalidation and job planning.

Job responsibilities
Provide clear leadership and direction to the anaesthetic team of Sunderland acting as a source of advice both within and out with the Trust (if appropriate).
Be the key person for advice, support and guidance to the anaesthetic team in the provision of anaesthesia care.
In conjunction with the Divisional team assist in the delivery of a comprehensive service to maintain the management and follow-up of patients.
Develop good working relationships with all members of the theatre team
Formulate and update guidelines and protocols for the department where appropriate

Person Specification
Experience
* Experience and training in post-graduate education.
* Demonstrates the ability to organise and deliver management activity and training
* Evidence of significant interest in research and/or service quality improvement.
* Evidence of out of theatre anaesthesia including MRI
Qualifications
* Must hold FRCA or equivalent qualification
* Hold a CCST and be on GMC Specialist Register or be within 6 months of being admitted to the GMC Specialist Register
Knowledge and Skills
* Possess good interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrable evidence of good team working
* Evidence of skills required to perform advanced regional anaesthesia in a stand-alone block room environment
* Evidence skills required for paediatric anaesthesia appropriate for the district general paediatric population
