Academic Support Assistant Location: York, North Yorkshire Contract: Full-time / Term-time only Start Date: As soon as possible GSL Education is seeking a caring and motivated Academic Support Assistant to join an Ofsted graded ‘Good’ School in York. This rewarding role focuses on helping students across the curriculum to achieve their potential, with particular emphasis on supporting learners with special educational needs (SEN). As an Academic Support Assistant, you will: Provide academic and pastoral support to pupils, ensuring they are engaged and able to access learning in a positive and inclusive environment. Deliver targeted interventions in literacy, numeracy, and study skills, tailored to both whole-class needs and individual SEN support plans. Work 1:1 and with small groups of pupils with a variety of needs, including ASC, ADHD, SLCN, and SEMH, adapting approaches to suit different learning styles. Assist in the use of strategies such as Read Write Inc., Makaton, and sensory or play-based activities to support communication and learning. Support pupils during times of dysregulation or challenge, helping them develop resilience, independence, and confidence. Collaborate with teaching staff, the SENCO, and parents to track progress and contribute to personalised learning plans. As the successful Academic Support Assistant, you will have: A passion for supporting students of all abilities, particularly those with SEN. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build positive relationships with pupils and staff. Patience, empathy, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Experience working with children or young people is desirable, especially within SEN settings, but training will be provided. A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people.
