Project manager

Offer description

Overview

How’s this for job satisfaction? At Scottish Water we look after Scotland's most precious natural resource. From source to tap, we’re guarding Scotland’s reputation for refreshingly pure water, and caring for our environment at the same time.

Sound good? We’re looking for 2 Project Managers to join our HAUC Diversions Team. You’ll play a key part in protecting our assets while supporting development across Scotland, technically assessing and responding to developer enquiries where new projects may impact Scottish Water’s infrastructure, and overseeing the delivery of HAUC Diversions through the full C2-C9 process. You’ll manage both technical and financial assessments and work closely with external customers, offering technical advice and information that helps them move projects forward while ensuring our networks remain safe, compliant, and protected.

What you’ll do

* You’ll be the first point of contact for diversion enquiries, logging, tracking, and closing them in Astro Dynamics. This includes checking information is complete, keeping records up to date, and ensuring responses are accurate and timely.
* You’ll review technical submissions from developers, utilities, and other third parties, confirming any clashes with Scottish Water assets and checking designs against our standards. This will include supporting C3 and C4 diversion designs with consultants and working with organisations like Transport Scotland, BEAR Scotland, Network Rail, and local councils to secure approvals.
* You’ll keep projects moving by managing relationships with clients and colleagues, from design through to construction. This includes reviewing costs with our estimating team and clients, agreeing cost shares, and tracking progress through to final accounts. You’ll work closely with our Managed Delivery team to monitor delivery, flag risks, and resolve issues.
* You’ll ensure diversion works are safe, compliant, and cause as little disruption to customers as possible. You’ll review risk assessments and method statements, support health and safety action groups, and contribute to continuous improvement.

What you’ll need

* You’ll bring a solid understanding of how water distribution and wastewater systems operate, with the confidence to make quick, informed decisions when issues arise. This means balancing operational needs with customer impact and ensuring investment delivers long-term value.
* Strong communication and negotiation skills are essential, as you’ll often work with regulators, local authorities, developers, and consultants. You’ll need to explain technical issues clearly, influence decisions, and represent Scottish Water’s interests while building positive relationships.
* You’ll have experience managing projects and budgets, from reviewing technical submissions and cost proposals through to keeping schemes on track during delivery. You’ll ensure compliance with legislation like the Water (Scotland) Act, the Sewerage (Scotland) Act, and health and safety requirements.
* Finally, you’ll be adaptable and customer-focused, ready to work in a mix of office and site environments and respond when challenges arise.

Looking out for you

While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. We make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance. You’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). You can even buy five more if you need a little extra time, and you can take paid time off to volunteer in your community. We have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave, and flexible working options. For your future, there’s our pension and life assurance, plus an annual company bonus and access to SW Splash – rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.

The not-so-small print

This role will be a Grade 7. If you’re new to Scottish Water, you’ll join us on a starting salary of £44,030. Performance-driven pay progression would then allow you to move through the range to a maximum of £55,000.

If you’re interested in this role – or know someone else who might be - we’ll be accepting applications until midnight on Wednesday 24th September.

Job offers at Scottish Water are conditional, and will be confirmed on completion of our pre-employment screening, e.g. referencing, criminal record checks, license checks, etc. Screening is conducted on our behalf by a third party, and must be completed before your start date. Don’t worry - we’ll only start these checks once you’ve accepted an offer.
