Senior Fellow, Intensive Care Medicine – University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust

Start date: 5th August 2026. Contract: Fixed term, ends 3rd August 2027, purpose: Training Contract.


Responsibilities

* Support provision of a first‑class clinical service and provide effective middle‑grade leadership (ST3 level or above) to staff on the unit.
* Support clinical decision making of medical and nursing staff.
* Lead, with the Consultant workforce, the education programme for junior doctors.
* Conduct clinical practice in accordance with the Trust’s procedures and operating policies.
* Actively participate in departmental and undergraduate teaching programmes.
* Work within the framework of team decisions and show initiative, enthusiasm, and flexibility.
* Be a senior member of the critical care team, providing support on the registrar/airway rota (ST3 level or above).
* Assess and admit critically ill adult patients to ICU, stabilise them and formulate an initial clinical plan, including ventilation, vasopressors, renal support, advanced airway skills and insertion of arterial and central venous lines.
* Perform daily reviews of ICU patients, present findings to the duty Critical Care Consultant, and organise and interpret further investigations.
* Review critically unwell patients outside the critical care unit as directed by the duty Consultant and critical care outreach team.
* Support the learning and development of the wider critical care clinical teams.
* Participate in the undergraduate teaching programme and meet mandatory training requirements.


Qualifications

* Minimum of 6 years of specialty training.
* Hold a relevant higher‑specialty examination (e.g. FRCP, FRCA, FRCS).
* Portfolio of evidence demonstrating progression in line with the curriculum for the speciality.
