Job Summary
Situated within our £32m state-of-the-art Global Technology Centre (GTC) in Filton, Bristol, and as a result of continued growth across our programmes, a number of positions have arisen for Research Engineers with a background in advanced composite manufacturing process development to join us, and to help shape the future of flight. Our programmes are at various stages from conception to first gate, and we encourage candidates at all career stages to apply.
As a Research Engineer, you will be an integral member of the GTC technology team, working on developing advanced composite manufacturing processes for current and future aircraft wing applications. We seek talented individuals with the skills and passion to become future leaders in this field.
You will draw on your broad engineering knowledge to work on research tasks in the TRL1-6 range, executing tasks according to plan, demonstrating a logical approach to problem solving, and engaging confidently with internal stakeholders.
The Programme
SUStainable WING Solutions (SusWingS) is a 50% ATI funded, Airbus led programme following on from the Wing of Tomorrow. It aims to develop technologies that reduce emissions from aircraft manufacturing and operation, focusing on lighter, more efficient aircraft with lower environmental impact.
The project involves collaboration between Airbus, GKN Aerospace, Cranfield University, and the University of Sheffield, focusing on technologies such as single-sided fasteners, composite material developments, numerical analysis models, and environmental impact monitoring.
Job Responsibilities
* Understand the strategic direction of your project’s target products.
* Manage Work Package or small Work Stream budgets.
* Contribute to planning and funding proposals.
* Develop and update Technology Development Plans and Business Cases.
* Ensure planning documentation is accurate and on track.
* Support or lead development tests and trials.
* Record data and results from tests accurately.
* Produce detailed technical documentation.
* Explore exploitation routes with guidance from the Work Stream Lead.
* Support stakeholder management and supply chain management as needed.
* Adhere to EH&S policies and promote a safety culture.
Job Qualifications
Applicants should have experience in composites, ideally with a degree in Engineering or equivalent (Aerospace/Mechanical/HND or Degree Apprenticeship). Skills and experience should include composite manufacturing methods, product lifecycle awareness, budget and schedule management, oven/autoclave programming, resin infusion, composite processing, metrology, and relevant aerospace or industry experience.
