JOB TITLE: Teacher - Special
REPORTS TO: Principal
Professional Duties of a Teacher
* Exercise of general professional duties as circumstances may require, under the reasonable direction of the principal and/or the employing authority.
* Planning and preparing courses and lessons; teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work in school and elsewhere.
* Assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils.
* Promoting the general progress and well-being of pupils; providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters; keeping relevant records and reports.
* Communicating with parents and co-operating with external bodies as approved; participating in meetings for curriculum, pastoral arrangements and other duties.
* Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments and references relating to pupils; contributing to staff development and professional development; promoting positive behaviour for learning.
* Discipline/Health and Safety; participating in examinations preparation and supervision; involvement in school administration and management activities as required.
* Maintaining good order and discipline; safeguarding health and safety; contributing to school planning and development, including curriculum and pastoral arrangements.
* Participation in staff development schemes; reviewing teaching methods and programmes of work; advising and co-operating with the Principal and other teachers on course development.

Section 1 - Essential Criteria
* Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
* Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
* Minimum of 5 years in the last 10 years’ demonstrable experience of using a range of effective classroom strategies to provide support and challenge children and young people of all abilities, including those with Special Educational Needs; demonstrable experience of developing positive relationships for learning with children and young people.
Section 2 - Essential Criteria
* Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum and safeguarding and child protection policy/practice; understanding of the SEND Code of Practice and its implications.
* Knowledge of current assessment methods used with children and young people with SEN; ability to diagnose, plan for learning and measure progress.
* Knowledge of approaches to promoting positive behaviour for learning (e.g., Restorative Practice); knowledge of IT systems and digital classroom tools.
* Skills/Abilities: effective teaching and classroom management; inclusive learning environment; initiative, problem-solving, flexibility; collaboration with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community; ability to work as part of a team; motivation and professional development.
* Values Orientation: evidence of alignment with the School’s Values/ethos.
Section 3 - Desirable Criteria
* Experience of teaching children with Developmental Language Disorder.
* Experience of teaching pupils for whom English is not their first language.
* Experience of Annual Review process, Personal Learning Plans, monitoring pupil progress, target setting and intervention.

* The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines working directly with children as ‘regulated activity’. Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background will be required if appointed to a post involving regulated activity.
