Project Communications Officer
Join Balfour Beatty plc and bring stakeholder engagement to life as a Project Communications Officer based in Sudbury, Suffolk. In this role you will support the BTNO project – a critical infrastructure upgrade that powers the UK’s transition to net zero – by delivering clear, engaging communication to our internal team and external partners, including National Grid.
About the role
The BTNO project will reinforce the electricity network between Bramford and Twinstead to support increased power generation and transmission. As a self‑starter you will spend most of your time on site, building and maintaining relationships with colleagues and key stakeholders. Your day‑to‑day responsibilities will involve creating communication outputs that drive engagement, build trust, and protect our reputation.
What you’ll be doing
* Live the Balfour Beatty values and behaviours and support the project leadership team to embed these into the project’s culture.
* Manage the delivery of an impactful communications plan, ensuring content is written in Plain English, delivered in a timely manner through appropriate channels and approved by all relevant parties before publishing.
* Ensure accurate stakeholder data and segmentation is available and continually managed in line with GDPR to achieve successful communication delivery and measurement.
* Maintain an ongoing pipeline of content to deliver a monthly project newsletter.
* Coordinate and participate in project‑led community relations events to raise awareness of project impact, milestones and successes – including public exhibitions, community meetings and liaison working groups.
* Manage the delivery of agreed site‑visit programmes, identifying opportunities to showcase expertise, raise profiles and build trust with the local community, customers and partners.
* Work closely with project managers and BB Helpline/client customer service teams to facilitate the resolution of project‑related enquiries/complaints in a prompt and professional manner.
* Collaborate with the project operational teams to identify future activities that may need stakeholder engagement, ensuring outputs are managed as part of the project communications delivery plan.
* Ensure project site(s) branding, hoarding and information boards comply with Balfour Beatty brand guidelines and are regularly updated as required.
Who we’re looking for – Essential
* Experience in marketing, public relations, communications or a related field.
* A demonstration of a track record delivering a positive and professional customer experience.
* Confidence engaging with external customers and stakeholders face‑to‑face.
* Ability to manage conflict with diplomacy and empathy to ensure a mutual outcome.
* Excellent writing, storytelling, presentation skills and strong attention to detail.
* Proficiency in interpreting technical principles and translating them into simple and engaging communications.
* A team player who adapts positively to changing stakeholder demands.
* A self‑starter with strong organisational skills who can work independently, manage competing deadlines and report on outcomes with clarity.
* A full driving licence and willingness to travel.
* Computer literate and proficient in Microsoft Office 365 applications.
Who we’re looking for – Desirable
* A bachelor’s degree or equivalent higher education/industry recognised qualification in marketing, public relations, communications or a related field.
* Membership of an industry body such as CIPR, IOIC, CIM or similar.
* Experience working on construction/civil‑engineering infrastructure projects.
* Good understanding of the regulatory environment in construction/ power transmission and distribution industries.
