An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated, enthusiastic individual to join our team at Caswell Clinic. Caswell Clinic is a 62 bed WJCC commissioned regional medium secure forensic unit that offers specialized assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and aftercare services for adults with complex mental health needs, including transferred prisoners and patients subject to MOJ restrictions.

The position offers the opportunity to contribute to the multi-disciplinary team in the delivery of a high quality, evidence based, patient centred care to individuals with on-going mental health needs. The service has an ethos and philosophy surrounding the principles of recovery focused care.

As the post holder you will be expected to support the Registered Nurses and demonstrate an ability of working to a high standard and achieving quality patient care. It is desirable that candidates have previous experience in supporting patients within the healthcare setting and particularly mental health. The successful candidate will be required to be passionate about delivering an exceptional level of care and be flexible to the needs of the service.

The service encourages continuous personal development and has a strong commitment to clinical governance. You will be actively encouraged to engage in a wide range of education and training as we believe this is integral to providing excellent and relevant holistic care.

Main duties of the job

Works as part of the multidisciplinary team delivering care to patients/service users experiencing mental health needs in the community/home setting or inpatient services, with support and supervision provided by a registered healthcare professional.

Undertakes or supports personal care activities, daily living skills/tasks and clinical care duties with minimal support and supervision as delegated by a registered healthcare professional in accordance with the HEIW All Wales Guidelines for Delegation.

Supports the enhanced observation of patients who present as a high risk to themselves or others due to a mental health, cognitive or clinical condition.

Ensures the registered healthcare professional is regularly updated on the patients/client’s condition and progress.

Ensures the working environment is safe and hygienic following infection prevention and control policies and processes.

Contributes to the teaching and supervision of students and junior staff.

Delivers role in accordance with Health Board/Trust Values and Code of Conduct for HCSW’s in Wales including maintaining physical, procedural and relational security.

Essential criteria

1. Minimum of Qualification Credit Framework – QCF Level 3 (formerly NVQ Level 3) in a health care related subject Or Equivalent experience and can evidence work based competency demonstrating theoretical knowledge, and the ability to undertake clinical care duties relevant for the role which is gained through experience and worked based training/short courses.
2. Evidence of maintaining their personal development, demonstrates an understanding of the scope of the role in the context of the nursing team.
3. Evidence of working within specialist care setting. Knowledge and understanding of the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers in Wales
4. Knowledge of the fundamental’s aspects of care and the importance of the promotion of health and wellbeing, understanding of basic physiology, e.g. normal vital signs, fluid balance, nutritional requirements, Understands the principles of confidentiality, and principles of consent prior to undertaking care behaviour and wellbeing/mental requirements health or learning disability requirements
5. Understands the principles of Safeguarding adults/children to keep patients within their care safe, understanding of when to seek advice and escalate to the appropriate registered professional for expert help and advice, Understanding of the Health Board’s Values and Behaviour Framework

7. Evidence attendance at courses / study days pertinent to speciality e.g. working within the community/forensic Mental Health patients who have required a minimum of Medium Secure Care Services etc.
8. Understanding of caring for individuals with particular conditions; for example, dementia, mental illness, learning disabilities relevant to area of practice

11. Ability to work effectively as a team player under appropriate supervision, and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Able to organise self and others to achieve delegated task. Able to effectively and appropriately escalate concerns to reduce risk and promote patient safety. Ability to deal with non-routine and unpredictable nature of the workload, prioritise workload and individual patient contact.
