Job Profile: Automation Engineer (PowerShell‑Focused)

Overview
We’re looking for a technically sharp, automation‑minded engineer to join our growing team. This role is ideal for a seasoned 2nd Line Support Engineer who enjoys solving problems at scale and wants to move deeper into scripting, automation, and workflow optimisation. You’ll work closely with colleagues in our large Network Operations Centre (NOC), analysing recurring incidents and identifying opportunities to eliminate manual effort. From there, you’ll design, build, test, and support automated solutions using PowerShell in conjunction with our robotic process automation (RPA) platform.

Key Responsibilities
Automation & Scripting
1. Develop robust, maintainable PowerShell scripts to automate common support tasks and incident resolutions.
2. Build automation workflows that reduce ticket volume and improve response times.
3. Maintain documentation for automations in production.
4. Collaborate with engineers in the Automation team to build and refine automations.
Operational Insight & Collaboration
5. Work closely with the NOC team to identify high‑volume or high‑impact tickets suitable for automation.
6. Translate operational pain points into technical automation requirements.
7. Collaborate with engineers across multiple teams to ensure solutions are safe, scalable, and aligned with best practices.
Deployment & Support
8. Deploy automation solutions into production environments with appropriate testing and change control.
9. Provide ongoing support, troubleshooting, and iterative improvements for existing automations.
10. Monitor automation performance and proactively refine scripts and workflows.
RPA & Platform Development
11. Contribute to the development of automation within our RPA platform.
12. Build cross‑system workflows that streamline business processes beyond traditional scripting.
Essential Skills & Experience
13. Strong experience in a Service Desk, 1st Line, or 2nd Line support role.
14. Solid working knowledge of PowerShell, including scripting, modules, error handling, and automation patterns.
15. Understanding of Windows Server and backup solutions
16. Ability to analyse support trends and identify automation opportunities.
17. Experience troubleshooting complex technical issues across multiple systems.
Desirable Skills
18. Experience of working in a managed service provider (MSP) environment.
19. Knowledge of monitoring tools and event‑driven automation.
