Job Title: Embedded Software Engineer (Linux)
Salary: £45-50k DOE

Your new role
Here at Hitachi Rail, we have a unique opportunity for an experienced and skilled Embedded Software Engineer (Linux) to join the team. This role is to work as part of a team to develop software for next generation products as part of Hitachi Rail Ltd.’s vehicle and track Condition Monitoring System. The role is to develop embedded C software for Wireless Sensor Nodes as well as high level language software for Wireless Monitoring Control Unit gateway products.
As an Embedded Software Engineer (Linux) is required to ensure the team can deliver its crucial commitments. Excellent coding skills will be required. The role will be based at the Hitachi Rail office in Eastleigh moving to a hybrid office/home working environment upon completion of probation. Office attendance is required for design and planning meetings and configuration of physical hardware. Occasional work-related travel is also a requirement of the role.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Design, develop and debug embedded C software.
2. Design, develop and debug Python software.
3. Customisation of embedded Linux e.g. via The Yocto Project (YP).
4. Linux programming.
5. Program on limited footprint MCUs.
6. Conform to software development processes, configuration management and quality assurance.
7. Support and follow company procedures and processes.
8. Take advantage of staff development opportunities and periodic performance reviews in accordance with terms and conditions specified by the company.
9. Undertake other reasonable duties at the request of the line manager.
10. Other duties and responsibilities express and implied which arise from the nature and character of the post within the department (or section) mentioned above or in a comparable post in any of the Organisation’s other sections or departments.
About you
Knowledge, skills, and experience:
11. Degree in software or engineering subject.
12. Proven experience in a software development position.
13. Strong experiance and knowledge of embedded Linux customisation is a must.
14. Excellent proficiency in C and Python.
15. Knowledge of electronics.
16. Radio communications experience.
17. Experience in Agile software development.
18. Experience in Design for test – Test Driven Development (TDD) and Behave – Behaviour-Driven Development (BDD).
19. Experience of Continuous Integration e.g. TeamCity, Jenkins etc.
20. Knowledge of Software development processes, configuration management and quality assurance.
21. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
22. Analytical problem-solving ability.
23. “Hands on” approach to solving problems in a calm and effective manner.
