Laboratory tasks are performed at bench height standing or sitting at tall draughtsman seats. Tasks include:
* Specimen reception duties - receipt and sorting of specimens which range from small pots to large buckets - computer data entry
* Supporting the training and development of new staff
* General laboratory duties - replacing/disposing of chemicals on laboratory machines - moving of 5 litre containers using a trolley and fume cupboard - daily maintenance on machines - making stock solutions of chemicals - general stock control of laboratory consumables - ordering, receiving, delivering (requires movement of supplies weighing up to 20kg using cages and a trolley, placing them in relevant stores)
* Specimen disposal (human tissue for diagnosis)
* Scanning of paperwork, scanning of histology slides for digital pathology
* Filing and retrieving slides, tissue blocks and specimens according to regulations
Role Responsibilities:
* Works to achieve competencies across the repertoire of the department as appropriate to grade
* Effective communication of information about specimens and test results with other staff groups both internal and external
* Receives sensitive information from patients and their representatives where empathic skills are required
* Displays and maintains an appropriate level of IT skills, to input patient and request data, maintain and amend patient records and interrogate the laboratory and hospital databases
Scientific and Clinical Responsibilities:
* Accepts a full range of clinical samples into the department, working with staff within the hospital and operating the air tube system and specimen hoist
* Assesses samples for urgency and sorts by laboratory section
* Matches samples and request forms and assigns unique laboratory numbers, requiring complete accuracy and attention to detail
Analytical and Interpretation Responsibilities:
* Performs a variety of manual laboratory procedures under the direct supervision of State Registered BMS staff
* Conducts analysis of specimens, assessing the process and outcomes of investigations in line with quality control criteria and SOPs
Requirements:
* GCSE English, Maths, Science (4-9 or equivalent)
* One of the following: A levels, Level 2 BTEC Apprenticeship in Healthcare Science, QCF Level 3 in Pathology Support or equivalent science qualification at QCF Level 2/3
Desirable criteria:
* Science foundation degree
* Basic keyboard skills
* Biomedical support worker with experience in NHS Cellular Pathology laboratory (histology)
* Computer data entry experience
