Overview

This post is an excellent opportunity for an SLT who is passionate about stroke care and wanting to develop their skills within the Stroke Team as a Band 6 SLT. The Stroke Team provide input to the hyper acute stroke unit, Acute stroke unit and in patient stroke rehabilitation as well as providing support in the community working alongside the Early supported stroke discharge team and with other MDT professionals in community settings. There are opportunities for group work and the use of digital technology to support patient care as appropriate. We are a small team, where you will receive a warm welcome, regular supervision, training and development opportunities and a united team approach.


Main duties of the job

To provide specialist assessment, management and treatment to patients with swallowing and/or communication problems within the stroke service which covers Acute inpatients, Early supported Stroke discharge team and general stroke community patients.

* To be responsible for a specialist Speech and Language Therapy stroke caseload across North Cumbria as part of the wider community Speech and Language Therapy team.
* To participate in the development and delivery of training and information packages for a wide range of professionals and carers in the area of stroke.
* To contribute to and lead on (where appropriate) service audits, quality improvement projects and service redesign.
* To work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary framework to achieve integrated care for patients.
* Regular attendance and contribution to patient and family meetings, both face to face and via video.
* Write high quality patient reports, including discharge reports for inpatients and community patients.
* To support clinical education and student placements.
* To cover other areas within the wider SLT as and when required.

Person Specification

Essential

* Support equality and value diversity
* Ability to maintain concentration in a range of clinical environments and withstand interruptions
* Car driver
* Car owner
* Able to travel across North Cumbria to support the stroke service as required by the team lead

Education and Professional Registration

* Degree in Speech and Language Therapy approved by the RCSLT
* HCPC registered
* RCSLT membership

Experience

* Experience of organising, managing and prioritising a clinical caseload
* Experience of MDT working and collaboration with other professionals
* Experience of swallowing assessment and management, including instrumental assessment
* Experience with stroke survivors and work across Acute and community settings
* Training others (e.g., carers, other AHPs)

Knowledge

* RCSLT code of conduct and professional standards
* Knowledge of local/national stroke drivers and SLT practice
* Knowledge of swallowing and communication disorders in stroke
* Knowledge of therapy techniques within the stroke population

Desirable

* Evidence-based rehabilitation approaches
* Videofluoroscopy competencies
* MB-SImp training


Skills and Aptitudes

* Ability to carry out and analyse assessments appropriate for different clients
* IT skills including telemedicine
* Negotiation and problem solving to prioritise assessments and interventions
* Motivation of clients and/or carers to engage in therapy
* Excellent interpersonal, communication, time management and organisational skills

Other requirements
